Modern Yemen was created in 1990 by merging North Yemen, which got independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1918, and South Yemen, which was British until 1967. Most people would either say that united Yemen is a new state, or that it's a successor to North Yemen, because it kept the northern capital in Sana'a and the northern President stayed in office all the way until 2012. It's only accurate to say Yemen got independence from the UK if you consider the modern state a successor of South Yemen.
