100 Biggest Cities in England under William the Conqueror

With the help of a map, can you name the 100 most populous settlements in England under the rule of William the Conqueror in 1086?
Population figures largely based off Josiah Cox Russell's Domesday Book estimates, though adjusted using more a modern estimation for average household sizes. Other estimates are calculated from data on OpenDomesday
Some of these towns have since been absorbed into larger settlements

why british isles geography is too many rivers in the William the Conqueror period than now?

Probably due to the coastline shifts. I did have to tweak the coastlines a bit for this one.

Due to natural geographical processes. Longshore drift, silting up of rivers, human engineering of rivers.

as a northerner I presume I have the harrying of the north to thank for why I did badly on this one

The north suffered very badly thanks to the Harrying of the North. The data for Yorkshire itself seems to imply that besides York, there were no other settlements over 300 inhabitants with only exception being Sherburn-in-Elmet (historically spelled Scireburne) at about 815 inhabitants.

The surveyors didn't cover all of what we now call England, so much of modern-day Cumbria wasn't in Domesday.

Another Amazing Map. Nominated!

I'm trying to use my nominations less sparingly cause it seems like I always have so many left over.

Also i got that one city you were tryna figure out the name of: idk if that's a type in problem or its just kinda how it is.

Thanks! I believe it's Bury St Edmunds you're talking about and yes, I had to be a bit lenient on the spelling due to different spelling variants of "Bury" being used in this time period.

Dude, love this map, where did you find the details?

Also, could you accept Hamwic for Southampton? I was sure that was the old name

+2
Level 55

Thanks! Sourcing is in the caveats. By this point Hamwic was no longer a name used by Southampton and had shifted away from its old early Anglo-Saxon settlement area/emporium.

Hamtune or Hamtone were both attested in the Domesday Book as written in 1086.

Just to add to the Southampton comment by Dekkie, the original Hamtun was in the area now called St Mary's, but by the time of Domesday, the town of Southampton had move south-west a little, to the end of the peninsula (now marked by surviving city walls). St Mary's continued to have settlement, but it was no longer town proper.

I'm not sure that Longport/Lamport/Langport was a town, but an area with some towns in it. I tried New Romney, Lydd, camber but Longport Hundred included those small towns.

It no longer exists, unfortunately. It was lost to the Denge Marsh at some point in history. The parish name is the only real thing that remains of the town as far as I'm aware.

The Domesday Book lists it as a settlement with 220 households in the Langport Hundred. Romney is also listed as a separate smaller town of 87 households.
