Alaska's original 8 boroughs

In 1961, the Alaska Borough Act created the concept of Boroughs to provide local government services and thus put the entire state into the Unorganized Borough. Only one borough was organized shortly thereafter, leading the state legislature to pass the Mandatory Borough Act requiring several boroughs to be organized by January 1st, 1964.
