The "eephus" pitch is a very slow, high-arcing pitch that's used to surprise a batter who is likely looking for a fastball. It is dangerous to throw, because if the batter is able to adjust to it, they may hit the ball 9 miles.
Bill "Spaceman" Lee famously made the mistake of throwing Reds' first baseman (and future Hall of Famer) Tony Perez an eephus pitch in the 6th inning of Game 7 of the 1975 World Series with Lee's Red Sox leading Cincinnati, 3-0.
Lee had already thrown one for a strike to Perez earlier in the game. Perez wasn't fooled the 2nd time and blasted a 2-run home run that got the Reds back into the game, which they went on to win, 4-3, to win the '75 World Series.
I know this quiz will never be featured, but I nominated it anyway, cuz it should be featured. I'm resigned to the fact that I'm just going to use up all of my noms on your quizzes today, Dimby. Phenomenal job. Thank you for all of the time & effort you put into these.
