-- i think "whose" is supposed to be "who is" or "who's"
However, I always assumed Pikachu was based on a Pika, which are closest to rabbits and hares (together they form the order Lagomorpha (hare-like)).
I tried to find out just now and went to the Japanese wikipedia where it says "Rather than a mouse, it is an image of an animal with cheek pouches like a squirrel"
All interviews with and quotes from designer Atsuko Nishida say that she modelled it after squirrels, which she was obsessed with at the time. And she made cheek pouches to store electricity instead of nuts.
Btw while going down this rabbithole (no pun intended! originally anyway) I found out Pika are called whistle rabbit/hare in several languages, in Dutch and in Japanese for instance and as another name for it in English.
It kept me quite busy this morning (ssh it's 4 pm..), translating japanese and finding out lots of stuff :)
Btw also found out that the game classifies it as mouse category, but that does not mean it iS a mouse ;)
