Water
Filtering
Filtering -
Cut
the
bottom
off
of
a
plastic
water
bottle
or
other
cone
like
container.
Put
cloth
at
the
bottom
of
the
container
either
in
at
the
bottom
(the
side
you
drink
out
of)
or
hold
it
directly
below
the
container.
USE
A
CLEAN
CLOTH.
Then
put
sand,
pebbles,
or
moss
to
be
the
filter.
Then
pour
the

filtered,

not
safe
to
drink
yet.
You
need
to
either
boil
it
or
use
a
water
tablet.
Boiling -
Make
sure
you
only
boil
clear
water,
as
contaminated
water
with
stuff
like
dirt
and
leaves
can
still
make
you
sick.
Tablets
or
drops -
Most
filtration
tablets
require
about
2
liters
of
water.
You
need
to
filter

first.
Put
however
much
water
the
tablets
ask
for
in
your
container,
and
add
the
drops
as
instructed.
Shake
or
stir
the
container
for
10-20
seconds.
Let
rest
for
20
minutes.

Check
the
Weather
Forecast -
So
that
you’re
not
hiking
during
a
storm
and
can
wear
proper
clothing.
You
can
use
the
News,
or
if
Answer
it
is
farther
away,
you
can
look
it
up.
Pack
plenty
of
Food
and
Water -
The
website
said
that
the
rule
of
thumb
is
1
liter
of
water
for
every
2
hours
of
hiking.
If
you’re
hiking
in
hot
temperatures
or
doing
a
strenuous
uphill
hike,
you’ll
want
to
carry
more.
Pack
Essentials -
Reliable
Navigational
Tools
(paper
map,
GPS),
Answer
Sun
Protection,
Headlamp,
First
Aid
Kit,
Knife/Multi-tool,
Supplies
to
start
a
fire
(matches,
lighter,
tinder,
etc),
Extra
Clothing,
Extra
Food
and
Water,
Emergency
Shelter
(Tent).
STOP
Method -
If
You
Get
Lost;
use
the
STOP
method:
S -
Stay
Calm:
Sit
down,
drink
water,
and
regulate
your
body
temperature.
T -
Think:
Recall
your
last
known
location
and
check
your
map
for
Answer
clues.
O -
Observe:
Look
for
footprints,
landmarks,
or
listen
for
other
hikers.
P -
Plan:
If
you
know
the
way
back,
proceed
carefully.
If
not,
stay
put
and
use
signals
of
three
(whistle
blasts,
shouts,
or
smoky
fires)
to
attract
rescuers.
Use
the
buddy
system
Stay
on
the
trail
Be
careful
when
crossing
water,
only
wade
if
it
is
shallow.
