I wasn't sure about the clue "The predecessor to the modern-day version of F". The letter F? Is there an instrument called the "F"?

It's a predecessor of the French Horn, which is the answer for F (I do agree that it's confusing wording though).

A viola can actually play seven pitches (measured by the western system of a twelve tone scale) that are lower than the range of a violin. The lowest string of a viola is a fifth lower than the lowest string of a violin, thus allowing it to play more than just one pitch lower than a violin.

It's not quatro, it's cuatro. I've never seen it like that before. I did a quick search and it's referred to as "cuatro" everywhere.
