Source: Ethnologue. Counting native speakers, though for some languages only the total number was available.
The colors indicate the language family:
Black: Indo-European
Light blue: Niger-Congo
Green: Austronesian
Pink: Afro-Asiatic
Dark blue: Sino-Tibetan
Purple: other.
Numbers can be outdated or rough estimates
The difference between separate languages or dialects is not clear-cut. I try to be lenient in the type-ins, suggestions are welcome.
Jula, Bambara and Malinke are different names for pretty much the same vernacular language, so I think they should be grouped together like Serbo-Croatian, Dutch-Limburgish-Afrikaans etc.
No, that was also a surprise for me. Ethnologue divides Nahuatl in no less than 28 languages. The Huasteca dialect itself consists of three entries: Western (400k), Central (196k) and Eastern (410k). Beware that these numbers may be outdated.
I am always willing to help. The basics of making quizzes on Jetpunk are easy, you will figure it out. For making maps, see Jetpunk's SVG guide. As for the source data of this quiz, I can't help you, because I no longer have access to Ethnologue. If you have any questions, let me know.
Here's hoping this gets featured :)
(don't they have like 1.7M speakers with 1M speaking the Huastec dialect?)
