Grammar: Taller peak of the two

Level 78
Feb 2, 2021
Neither taller nor tallest is correct, as the question is referring to a point. The correct would be highest peak or higher peak. In a higher vs highest (or taller vs tallest) argument, highest (or tallest) would be more correct because the question specifies "of the two". Although this difference is negligible and both would certainly be correct.

I thought England and Scotland were constituent countries, Wales a principality and Northern Ireland a province. You live and learn.

Wales isn't a principality since it isn't ruled by a prince. Historically it's more of a debate, but certainly since the United Kingdom has existed, it isn't a principality

Even if Wales were a principality (legally it isn't), that fact would not prevent it from being a constituent country of the UK: a principality is just a realm ruled by a prince, and there are three principalities in the world that are independent these days (and UN member), so being a principality doesn't stop somewhere from being either a constituent country of the UK or an independent sovereign nation.

in the grand tradition of Jetpunk pedantry, Wales has only one official language, which is Welsh. English has no formal legal protection anywhere in the UK.

Yep. Notice the bit in your link where it says that "Welsh is the only official language in any part of the UK"?

Clue: it's in the bit headed 'language'.

This is wrong England is technically a Celtic nation because Cornish language and people are Celts
+8

Cornwall is considered one of the 6 Celtic Nations.
+1
Level 58

What one considers a nation is up for debate, but in terms of the proper noun phrase the 'Celtic Nations', that almost exclusively refers to 6 entities with surviving Celtic languages and prominent Celtic cultural traits: Cymru (Wales), Alba (Scotland), Éire (Ireland), Kernow (Cornwall), Mannin (Isle of Man), and Breizh (Brittany). There is a blurry line concerning some bits of Iberia, but academic consensus is that continental Celtic cultures and languages don't count when referring to the modern day. Thus only the two families of Insular Celtic languages/cultures are included: Brythonic (Welsh, Cornish, and Breton) and Gaelic (Irish, Scottish, Manx). (Note that even though Brittany is obviously geographically continental, its language comes from Cornwall and is therefore considered Insular). England could probably fit into the same category as Galicia and Asturias, but just like how Latin culture is overwhelmingly dominant there, Germanic culture is overwhelmingly dominant in England

The megacity one is incorrect if you are just talking about the city of London, Londons population is less than 10 million. Unless you are including the outer area which doesn't actually count as London, which should be said on the question as it is misleading

Somehow I read the capital question as having 6 letters.. no idea why. So I got it wrong, the only one though! I have done like 10 true false quizzes today and I aways get 2 or 3 wrong.

Surprised at how low the Celtic nations one is though! Do people think English is a Celtic language then? . Especially since there are some other more obscure questions, like the st David one.
