Vitus Bering should be credited with that discovery. Please accept "Magellan" as an answer. Why do you say that Barents survived a winter at the North Pole? he never got there. Also check spellings on your answers as some are dubious.
The first man who acrossed the world was Juan Sebastian Elcano as Magellan died in the Philippines. It was Elcano who captained the remaining float, finished the expedition and came back to Spain.
