a clockwork orange was never rated NC-17. it came out in 1972 and the NC-17 rating was not introduced until 1990. it was released in the US with an X rating and when it was finally released on VHS for the first time it was given either a NR for "not rated" or just slapped with an R

NC-17 is the same thing as X, as per the instructions. It was just renamed to distance the rating from pornographic films which had been self identifying as X-rated.

It's not really accurate to say that "X was changed to NC17." Rather, X was discontinued and NC17 was created.

Fine, but it's the same thing under a different name, and trademarked. It fulfilled the same purpose as far as mainstream films go, which is what is relevant to the quiz.

How did Mary Poppins have a G rating on its original release? The MPAA rating system didn't even exist until four years later.

I believe you are correct, as the MPAA "ratings" system did not yet exist when Mary Poppins was released in 1964. However, it was assigned a "G" rating when it was reissued in theaters in 1973 and 1980, so I'm guessing that's what the quiz creator was using, even if it doesn't strictly conform to the "rating upon original release" as stated in the instructions.

Yeah, I could add a caveat saying as much, but I don't think it's really necessary. The first rating it was given under in MPAA ratings system was a G.

I must say, this quiz is amusingly impossible when you don't know the American rating system - it's fascinating seeing how perceptions don't line up across borders

Can't believe When Harry Met Sally is rated R.

I mean, the shadowy, anonymous "board" that assigns these "ratings" operates on a completely arbitrary basis... but the fake orgasm scene was probably a big factor there. And I'd imagine the producers had no problem with it, as it was a movie squarely targeted at adults anyway. I was 12 when it was released, and I probably never even heard of the movie until years later, and didn't see it until years after that.
