What I learned during research: Karakoram is the name of the mountain range that spans China, Pakistan, and India. Karakum is a large desert in Central Asia, mostly Turkmenistan. Karakorum was the capital of the 13th century Mongolian Empire. It least the "Kara" part seems to have the same origin, meaning "black".
