Australia isn't an island? 23 million people. Haiti and the Dominican Republic are technically not island countries. Combined, they make up the island of Hispaniola.

Australia is not a whole continent, and even if it was, why can't it be an island continent?

The reason Haiti and the DR are island Countries is because they only have land on an island. Yes, they share an island, but that doesn't mean they aren't island countries
