It's really a strange thing with Essen. Maybe they count the whole Ruhrgebiet (about 5 million inhabitants) as agglomeration of Essen.

Like I said, this may not be the most accurate source of information. Yes, Essen is debatable. Yes, Luanda is probably not the fifth biggest city in Africa. However, this was the site that had the most accurate information I could find.
