Successful 21st Century Military Coups

A coup is successful if the leader of the country is removed from office and does not regain control almost immediately. For example, in 2003 there was a successful coup in São Tomé and Príncipe but the President was restored to office in about a month. This is not considered a successful coup.

A coup is considered a military coup if the country's military or an organized rebel militia leads it.
