Homeland of Hobbits would be a better clue. I tried 'Smials' and 'Hobbit-hole' before I realised you wanted 'Shire'.

You tried 'Smials', even though there's no M, L and only one S in the grid? You tried 'Hobbit-hole', even though there are no Os or Bs, no T, L and only one H in the grid? That's impressively hopeful.

Well, I tried "den"... it's true that Homeland would be clearer.

and hobbit hole has 10 letters. So that would be quite an accomplishment to fit that in a 9 letter grid ;)

Homeland made me think of homeland security and made my mind go on a completely different path. The clue is fine as it is, I didnt hesitate a second

To aver is to assert, not to suggest.

For the" split with others" clue and as a regular Jetpunker, I saw "hairs" and my mind wouldn't go any further.

I was so sure ravished would be used that I just typed it in.

And got stuck backspacing it.

Wow, I got them all ! only 3,5% score 100% :) dry was my last one, not sure how to look at it, as a verb or not. 2nd to last was the 9 letter word, and think the one before that was to enter as an enemy.

43 seconds left btw. and offer suggestions took me a bit of thought aswell, and red root, I was thinking shard, because I recently learned that word :) and knew it was from beets. Edit: I see now that that is chard with a c ;)

Happy yay :)

I believe "Raid" could also work for "Enter as an enemy."

Right. Because who doesn't like a brand new razor to get a nice, close....de-hairing?

Would be nice to specify in the Dry clue that it's a noun not a verb. I kept thinking of verbs that mean "to dry"

It's neither a verb nor a noun. It's an adjective. I've submitted a change to the clue to avoid ambiguity.

A raven is a separate species from a crow.
+1
Level 72
Apr 2, 2025
Crow can refer to the family or the specific species. A raven is a type of crow. A crow is also a type of crow. As are magpies, rooks etc.

Invade doesn't really mean to conquer by military force. That's the goal, but you can invade a country and be unsuccessful at conquering it.

Split with others I was thinking of negative answers shed, rid etc- didn't get as far as distributing equally

Probably goes to the fact I had just had a disagreement so wasn't feeling very charitable!

For split with others I got stuck for a bit wondering why halve wasn't working, then I realized they were all capital letters and the one in the upper left corner was an I not an L.

Shame space for the clue is limited otherwise you could have the first one as: It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.

Surely American English differentiates between advice and advise (which should be spelled advize in my opinion).
