NAMES... are complicated
Welcome to another edition of Rosie can't seem and needs to procrastinate! I have 7 school papers to write in the next 2 weeks, but I am doing this instead... which basically sums up my mental state right now... ANYWAYS!
Let's start with MY name...
This might be the specific thought that inspired this blog, but it's definitely the most confusing part. It is no secret that Rosie is not my real name. All you need to do is look at the URL of this blog to know that. Rosie is the internet name that I have been using for as long as I can remember. Here's the thing: my username "HeyItsRose18" tends to lead people to just call me "Rose". This annoys me, and I'm not really sure why. "Rose" is actually my middle name, which is why I started using this specific username for basically everything. But for some reason, just being called that feels wrong
Maybe I should just change the username... but I don't want to. As a username, the 3 one-syllable words sound phonetically pleasing. Maybe it's just because I have been reading it for so long, but adding the extra syllable sounds wrong. Okay... on to the more traditional part of this blog...
What's with the "names have power" trope?
... It's weird, right? It happens in so many fantasy books/series/movies etc, and I think it's kinda weird. (Did I write this into my own fan fiction by accident... maybe...). That's all I really have to say here.
Naming patterns that annoy me: a quickfire round
Alliteration vs. Rhyming
They just sound cheesy. I have no issues with names that start with the same sound (the likes of Lena Luthor, Bucky Barnes, Bruce Banner, Peter Parker, etc.) I do love alliteration (almost as much as I like superhero movies/shows). BUT RHYMES? NO! There is something about that that makes me cringe. Names that rhyme seem more like cute nicknames or pet names to me. Like (proceeds to just make up random names)... "Allison Robinson", "Kylie Foley", etc. Even worse if the first/last names have the same amount of syllables.
On that note, I personally believe that someone's name should be more than 2 syllables (without needing to include their middle name if they have one). Having a first and last name that are each only 1 syllable seems so weird to me!
Syllables
Weird spellings
Reading someone's name should probably not give me a headache. Unless there is a linguistic reason, a name should be easy to read. I have been living in Ireland for 3 months now, but even the stereotypically "weird" Irish names make sense when you learn about the language. I'm sorry, but names like Maeysynn and Aaliviyah will never make any sense to me.
Conclusions
Low effort blog because if I do anything more, I am going to need to scream into my pillow for the fifth time today (and it's only 2am!). As always, put rant ideas in the comments and I will get to them when I get to them, hopefully when I have more brain power. I hope you enjoyed my thought spaghetti (actually I really don't care). By the way I don't proofread these, so if anything doesn't make sense, no you didn't.
Thank you for your cooperation,
Rosie
But seriously, what is it with people and weird spellings these days? Kevin as a name was fine, no need to go make it into Kevynn...
