This is a line chart displaying the growth of the United States' average against its median population from the 1790 census to 2025.
All years ending in 0 use census data; other years are official estimates also from the Census Bureau.
Average is the total of all the states added up, divided by the number of states. Median is either the center value of all the data listed by value, or if there're two, the average of them.
Excluding Washington, DC
The median states are currently Kentucky (ranked 25) and Louisiana (ranked 26).

I removed them from the total, including DC and Puerto Rico; the current divisor is 50.
