A Music Playlist to Get to Know Us Better

+36

The Story

In July 2023, on the AJF (the French-speaking Discord JetPunk server), inspired by a similar concept tried out on a private RedLightning's server, BolyaiAnna informally suggested that anyone who wanted to could create a playlist of 25 tracks representing their musical tastes as a fun way to get to know each other better.

This message led to the creation of 12 playlists and a pleasant moment of sharing and exchange, allowing these few members of the same community to reveal themselves a bit and discover each other through music.

The Idea

Today, I propose to implement this idea again, but on a much larger scale. The idea is that as many active members of our community as possible should be informed about this project and participate if they wish.

The Organisation

In order to give the opportunity to be informed about this to as many users as possible and allow everyone time to create a playlist that truly represents them, I will accept playlist submissions until March 1st. After that date, I will publish a second blog post summarising the (lack of) popularity of the initiative and, of course, presenting the various playlists submitted so that we can collectively get to know each other better through music.

In order to ensure the success of the initiative, it is crucial that EVERYONE involved carefully reads the rules and criteria below and takes care to follow them.

- Each playlist must contain exactly 25 tracks. This may seem like a lot to listen to but after consultation, this number seems to be the most appropriate to give everyone the opportunity to showcase the complexity of their tastes.

- The length of the playlist should remain reasonable. There is no clear limit: I appeal to everyone's common sense. Some genres are inherently represented by longer tracks than others. That's completely fine. The main point is not to troll by proposing an absurdly long playlist.

- The same artist should not appear more than twice in the same playlist. Of course, this point is not set in stone: if you only listen to Rick Astley songs, it would be stupid to force you to add tracks you don't listen to to your selection. But the aim of the project is also to highlight everyone's musical tastes in all their diversity.

- Submit your playlist in a format that can be read by everyone. Ideally, all playlists should be created on Spotify. However, I cannot impose its use and therefore remain open to YouTube Music, Deezer or Apple Music. For any other platform, please contact me before submitting your entry.

- To facilitate the processing of playlists, please title your playlist "[JetPunk username]'s JetPunk Playlist 2026". The order of the tracks in the playlist and an eventual description are not important.

- Try to avoid modifying your playlist after submission, both in the short term (only submit when you are sure) and in the long term (the idea is that this playlist should reflect your musical tastes as of February 2026, not evolve with them).

- Be intelligent and respectful in your choices. Songs with vulgar lyrics are of course tolerated but a track that clearly targets certain individuals in a malicious way will result in the rejection of the concerned playlist.

You can send me your playlist via this form once you have finished it.

Other than that, you are free to do as you wish! Do you only listen to instrumental music? Create a selection that reflects it! Are you a fan of Franz Liszt and heavy metal? No overall consistency is expected: highlight your listening habits in all their diversity!

Final Thoughts

In order to give this project a wider audience, I will soon propose a French version of this blog. Feel free to translate it into any language you speak and find relevant. The more the merrier!

I hope you find the idea appealing and that many of you will participate. It's of cours difficult to change the rules once the project has been launched but I am open to any comments or suggestions you may have.

Thank you in advance for your playlists, which I am really looking forward to discovering, and see you in a month for the results!

Nice initiative! Being Greek though, I don't think it will easily turn out very well

that’s so cool! it’s funny, back when i was getting into listening to music, i would find songs by searching up random words on Amazon music and listening to the results i found to see if i liked them. i found Bloody Hawk when i searched up “IKEA”, and it was an absolute bop so i listened to more of his stuff and through that found some stuff by Dani and Toquel. i really like Anagki Na Se Do and Oti Kai Na Ginei. greek is cool

Good idea to suggest a new edition of the shared playlists. I was wondering if you'd more encourage us to try to make a playlist of our tastes "of all time" or rather our current top songs. I'd probably go with the latter as I'm never satisfied by my various attempts of trying to make a playlist of all time.

That's actually a good question. With the rule about avoiding modifications, I tended to directit towards current musical songs. But I would say that's it's fine if some participants prefer to do it "of all time".

Ahhh, how can I pick 25 ? I listen to way more than that everyday, and I'm always finding new to me stuff that becomes my favourite...until I find something else obviously.

Nevertheless, I shall endeavour (oh tangent alert...thats the name of the ship I just finished building in Lego) (sorry) I shall endeavour to provide you with a list in due course.

Haha! I guess it will be teh same for most participants. At least that's my case as well. But teh point is also to liste to these playlists. 25 tracks already gives 1h30-2h playlists on average.

I'm actually struggling to limit mine to 25 as well. That's an interesting exercise.

I already have quite a few playlists on Spotify, I made a bunch of quizzes a few years ago and added a playlist to each one, plus some of my blogs as well.

Another one won't make a difference, I listen to Spotify a lot when I'm driving.

Track #1: Fishmans - Long Season - Live

Or perhaps 42 minutes is a tad long for an opener.

I had to bend the third rule a bit. The kings of Red Dirt could've very well gotten the whole playlist.

I don't if it does with any of you but when I make a new playlist and add one song that it shows recommended songs towards the bottom (which when you only have 1 song in the playlist, then it's just your most played songs on your account). Anyways, that's a pretty easy way to find at least a couple of songs I'm sure.

I submitted mine by the way. It was fun to make. Great idea! :)

So for the story blog I’m writing I actually have a playlist that I play when I’m writing, that loosely follows the events of the story when played from start to finish. It’s 27 songs, and I’ll upload it in a mb or blog post once the series is done to avoid spoilers.

Is there a way to make a playlist on Spotify without my account being associated? I think I'd rather not have my account be visible to everyone that sees my playlist.

Aaaargh. Cutting to 15 is rough. I have already cut so much weird stuff that defines my eclectic taste. Almost done, though. 🫡

25, not 15! I was advised to lower it to 10 to make the playlist more listenable. But I quickly thought about what I would like to include in my playlist to reflect my tates and realised that it would be too much pain. 🙃

Lol same. But I try to keep in mind that blogs are time consuming to write, and organizing it is probably a bit tedious too if he's trying to listen to them all first
