10th: Theta - Θ θ
Theta is a Greek-unique letter that is pronounced as the 'th' in 'thin'. In Greece, the 'th' of 'this' is done by Delta, so it's easy to pronounce.
I like the uniqueness of using a single letter for the 'th' sound, so right at the 10th place.
9th: Phi - Φ φ
Phi is the way Greek guys write the 'F'; they had Digamma (F f), but Digamma made another sound, and it disappeared. It is well known for being used as the Golden Number symbol (1,618033...)
It seems funny to write, and original enough to avoid using 'F'. Therefore, 9.
8th: Sigma - Σ σ ς
Yeah, the name of this letter is messed up. But avoiding obvious things, all three 3 forms of Sigma (Greek S) are 'cool'! The Σ is used in Variance, the lowercase σ seems an eye; and its 3rd form ς (for words' final) is better than S itself.
I like this letter, and in spite of its name, I will place it in the 8th place.
7th: Beta - Β β
This letter is a tricky classic: tricky 'cause it's the equivalent of 'v', not 'b'; but classic since it's one of the letters that originated the word Alphabet (alfa-beta).
It reminds me of ß, so 7th place.
6th: Gamma - Γ γ
I dislike this letter, yet I recognize it is crucial to the Alphabet. It makes plenty of sounds: the Spanish 'g', the 'y of 'yellow', an equivalent of 'ñ' and 'ng'...
Regarding its pronunciation, I kinda like the uppercase form. Just for that, 6th place
5th: Psi - Ψ ψ
4th: Pi - Π π
The letter Π in uppercase is somewhat unappealing, but the lowercase π is just 3.1415926% perfect.
If I don't put Pi in the 4th place, Cathlete's gonna kill me :)
3rd: Alpha - Α α
Yeah, clasic. It just's perfect. No explanations: the lowest of the podium.
2nd: Xi - Ξ ξ
Would you think this is an equivalent of the X? Really? The X symbol is just iconic, and the way Greeks made Xi is just perfect. Seeing 3 uncontinuous segments in a single character is rare enough, and that curvy 3 for lowercase is memorable.
I think is cool, so 2nd place. Whoever disagrees will be respected and burie-
1st: Omega - Ω ω
The uppercase symbol is somewhere between the iconic and the majestic. It's a Mega O, not just a Micro O; see the difference?
The lowercase is funny, just for that 1st place.
I honestly think pi is maybe a somewhat overrated number anyway.
interesting blog, there's another one called "Greek Transliterations" thats also interesting
