Five Things You Probably Didn't Know about the Message Board

Introduction

JetPunk has had its own Message Board since September 20, 2024, as an effort to move away from Reddit. This feature has been used by many people on the site to ask questions, troubleshoot problems, and as a means of self-promotion, among other uses. However, just like most other things, what you usually see is probably just a tip of the iceberg. Here's five things you probably didn't know about the JetPunk Message Board!

#1: Thread Titles Are Capped at 64 Characters

Yes, that's right. If you go to make a new thread on the Message Board, nowhere does it tell you that there's a limit to how long the title of a thread can be, only that the thread's content has a max limit of 3,000 chars. However, as you continue typing into the title, you'll notice that it eventually stops you from going any further. Count the characters and you'll notice that it's capped at 64 chars. This is probably to keep the message board visually clean by preventing overly long thread titles.

#2: Comment Counts Aren't Always Correct

In case you haven't noticed already, the number of comments shown on the MB outside a thread is sometimes different from the actual number of comments on a thread. This happens when a comment with child comments (replies) gets deleted. Apparently, when this happens, the child comments removed together with the main comment are not taken into account in the comment count shown outside the MB post itself.

This is unique to the Message Board, as other types of posts (quizzes, blogs, etc) don't show the total number of comments outside the post itself.

#3: It Used to Be... Messy

Newer users may not know this, but around late March and early April 2025, the Message Board had some rather chaotic times. As can be seen in this snapshot of the MB from early April, lots of threads were being posted, with a new thread coming every hour or so on average. Apparently, some users were treating it as a space to socialize rather than talk about JetPunk-related things, which was a significant departure from QM's original intention. Some people also spammed threads or discussed about silly things on the MB.

Eventually, on April 6th, the Quizmaster intervened. He took down the MB for a full day and then brought it back with six-month MB bans for about 50 users (and all their posts / comments removed) along with more stringent moderation policies going forward. Thanks to this, the Message Board is now a much more wholesome place than it was before.

(Thanks to Syrext and Capybarra for giving me this information on this blog!)

#4: It Used to Have a "Mystery Gap"

Before December 2025, the Message Board had a strange quirk: whenever you went to the next page of the MB, it somehow "skipped" certain threads in between the last thread of the current page and the first thread of the next page. This caused threads to temporarily "disappear" from the MB into a "mystery gap", and then emerge on the next page a few days later. Eventually, in this thread, Stewart confirmed that this behavior wasn't intended and that it had been fixed.

Also, it is unclear whether all historical MB threads will be kept forever, or oldest threads will eventually be removed as the size of the archive grows large. Based on what happened with the Front Page, it seems that the latter is not out of the realm of possibility.

#5: Thread Submission Times Are Rounded Differently

What do I mean by that? Well, on the main Message Board screen you see relative times of thread submission like "1 hour ago" or "5 days ago". But sometimes you see weird times like "24 hours ago" or "60 minutes ago", when you might be expecting "1 day ago" or "1 hour ago" respectively.

Why is this? Probably because they round numbers a bit differently. On most platforms, these are rounded down (meaning only the integer part is kept with all decimals discarded no matter what they are). Here, however, they are rounding the numbers to the nearest integer rather than always rounding down. This means that if the decimals are .5 or higher, the number will be rounded up. That's why you sometimes see those seemingly strange times displayed on the MB.

They are not alone in doing this - some other platforms like Reddit also appear to use this rounding convention.

Conclusion

This wraps up the blog. I haven't been using the MB for that long, so I might be missing some other interesting things / quirks with the message board. Feel free to comment if you are aware of any.

This is not the longest blog I've made, but I hope you found it interesting, thanks for reading, and see you in the next blog.

They no longer seem to show "60 minutes ago" or "24 hours ago".

Did they change the code of the MB after seeing this blog or have I been unaware of it for too long?

Does the 64-character limit count spaces as characters?

The character limit includes spaces.
