Why We Should Stop Researching Space

Each and every year, a significant amount of money, time and manpower is invested into space research. However, is this really worth it? In my opinion, the answer is a resounding "no". Here's why.

Why bother researching into something that's hardly useful in people's daily lives? If people know more about space, is this going to make their lives any better? Most probably not. At least I can't think of any, besides the bragging rights they can claim by showing off their knowledge in front of others.

Not that I don't support scientific research at all, but I think we'd be better off if we researched something that actually makes a difference for people - such as making AI better, improving people's health, or fixing some of the biggest global issues, just to name a few.

Just like many other things, not all knowledge is good. Some of it might not be good - at all. Space is a great example here.

There are a lot of scary-looking objects in outer space, and unsurprisingly, they make a lot of people feel frightened. Some of them (including myself) are even actively avoiding space-related knowledge just because of this. That is not easy, I'll tell you that. And it's actually getting harder and harder as scientists discover more about space.

Space research isn't easy - that means it takes a lot of time, a lot of effort, and a lot of money. These are all finite resources, meaning once you use them on one thing, you can't use them on other things (an idea known as opportunity cost in economics). And since much of these resources are invested into something that's completely useless or even harmful, they are all going to waste! Just think about what we could have achieved if we'd invested them into something that's actually useful.

If there's one thing I could change about the world, it's stop space research immediately. And if there's another, it's don't ever research into space again. That's the cease-and-desist I wish I could send to all space researchers. For the sake of all of us, go study something else. Please.
