A Month of Movies - Introduction

August - My Month of Movies

As I'm sure you realize, we are already a few days into the month of August. I apologize as it would have been more ideal to have made this introduction blog before the month began. However, as it turns out, I conceived the idea just this Sunday (3 Aug). I had realized I watched a different movie the past 5 consecutive days, with a 6th day on the way due to a planned movie night with my friends. I thought: what if I tried to watch a movie every day for the entire month of August? And thus my idea for this blog immediately followed.

Moreover, this can maybe be seen as a continuation/fulfillment of my short-lived Movie Thursday blog series from about 4 years ago.

This will admittedly be a short blog as I'm only introducing this idea, and I don't want to start listing movies that I will see / plan to see just yet. I will save that for a summary blog at the end of August.

But what I do want to take the opportunity to do in this blog is ask you all for some recommendations. I'm sure if I just surf around the random movies that show up on Netflix or Hulu I won't have any problems finding 25 more movies to watch. But I would rather make it a month of higher quality movies (if I can).

Suggestions??

So that leaves us with the most important part of this blog, what suggestions do you have?! Right now I am still in need of about 27 more movies to watch. I'm not sure how many films will be recommended, but if it happens to be more than 27, I will of course have to pick and choose which ones to watch. That being said, to ensure that I at least try to watch one movie per commenter (unless of course more than 27 users comment, though I assume that won't happen), here are some things to consider:

  • List one or two movies that you highly recommend I watch. Two might be better in case I can't access one of them or I've already seen one.
  • If they are available on Hulu, Netflix, or somewhere else I can access for free, even better as these are the streaming services which I currently pay for.
  • I like a good mixture of genres, so don't be afraid to recommend whatever comes to mind!
  • Feel free to list more movies beyond the highly recommended ones. If it's a popular movie, there's a pretty good chance I've already seen it. I will be avoiding re-watching movies unless it's one that I haven't seen in a long time.

The Irishman, it's on Netflix, it's quite long but it's worth it in my opinion. Not sure if you want more info but I'd rather not spoil much.

Like any ghibli movie, they are also on Netflix, just gonna list a few of my favorites in case you have seen some: Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Kiki's Flying Delivery Service.

Hope you enjoy!

Have you seen Green Book?

Is in Amazon Video, and it's about the American racism from 60~ years ago. Harsh movie.

No, I have not. I don't currently have Prime Video access, but maybe if there are enough movie requests that require it, I'll buy it for a month

Any of the old Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone. Watched one of them on a whim and I really enjoyed it. Nice bit of classic cinema that should be on Tubi for free.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is an excellent biopic that tells the story of how Al became a musician, from his abusive childhood to his first hit to his drug addiction to his unfortunate death. Made me super emotional. Should be on either Netflix or Roku (or maybe both).

Not sure how popular these movies are, haven't heard a whole ton of people talk about either but they both feature prominent figures in pop culture so it could go either way.

Thanks! Any of those Sherlock films in particular that you'd recommend?

I'd recommend watching either The Hound of the Baskervilles or The Voice of Terror first, since the former was the first one released and the latter started a sort of reboot placing the films during the Second World War, but given how timeless and iconic Sherlock Holmes is I feel like you could probably watch any film and have a good time.

If anything, I recommend you watch Eega. I also like Jathi Ratnalu (on prime) (its a comedy). Rangasthalam's also critically acclaimed. You may be able to find Eega and Rangasthalam on YouTube/Prime/Netflix idk.

Eega - Fly

Jathi Ratnalu - National Jewels

Rangasthalam - Theatre

Have you watched Your Name? I'm not sure where you watch it though, because I remember watching it in anime club & I don't remember if they used Crunchyroll or Netflix.

Alternatively, I know that A Whisker Away is available on Netflix.

This won the Best Film in Hong Kong last year. Not sure if it's available on US Netflix though (you may need a VPN). If so, it should be subtitled.

Since two (very classic but still good) Japanese animated movies have been recomended, I'll go for something else.

I would first recommend Amanda, an Italian movie that I discovered at the begining of this year and really enjoyed.

My second suggestion is OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies. A lot more famous in France but probably not elsewhere. This excellent parodic comedy is available on Netflix here, but no idea if that's the case elsewhere.

Good luck for this cool project! Without really trying to do so, I achieved it in January and February this year (the long and cold Swedish nights helped a lot). I guess that you will easily succeed as well.

You might have watched these because they’re pretty famous, but I’d highly recommend The Prestige or Fight Club if you haven’t watched them. Both great movies.

I don't watch a lot of movies... But are you not worried about your screen time?

Sorry, I cannot think of any suggestions right now. Maybe the Dead Poet's society. I heard that it's a good movie (and will watch it for school in two year's time. Haven't watched it yet).

Yeah, it’ll be a decent amount of screen time. I don’t think I’d wanna do more than a month.

And I’ve actually seen Dead Poets Society!

I'm not sure which service streams these, I can't tell you how I watch movies but it involves a burning piece of wood that floats down a certain river. ;)

In the last month I have watched these and can recommend them.

Monuments Men (WW2 drama based on true story)

The Book Thief (WW2 drama, again based on true story)

Summer Holiday (British comedy/musical from 1960s)

High Plains Drifter (Classic western with Clint Eastwood)

Gran Torino (modern drama about a Vietnam veteran)

Shawshank Redemption (prison drama set in 30's)

That will do you for now I think, I could make a list as long as your arm!

I am also taking notes for my list of future films to watch from these comments, and eventually from your blogs.

Hey, sorry I'm late to this blog but there's still half a month left so I'll try to recommend some good ones.

I always have to recommend La La Land (this is my favorite movie)

For more obscure movies: A Netflix original called Our Times was really good. It came out earlier this year. It's a Spanish time-travel movie about a husband and wife from the 60s who travel to 2025.
