Doggerland: Britain’s oldest mystery:

Doggerland - Britain’s greatest mystery:

A map of Doggerland ~10000 years ago.

Imagine this: You are a prehistoric nomad in the vast landscape of Poland. Over time, as more nomads settle, you find yourself with less area - so you explore, over time, you hear of a great tale of a land, a paradise - beauty to human eye. You walk for hundreds of hours, several days - eventually you arrive, you spot a small settlement in the distance, near a rolling hillside and flat plains, with vibrant forests stretching for hours, here it is - welcome to Doggerland.

Your mind gasps out loud, this is perfect - you immediately settle and take good use of the very fertile ground, perfect for crops, over time, your successors become further hunter gatherers, heading into the Mesolithic age - you hear tales of how you are so far ahead everyone else, as you begin to slowly travel west, you see more, more beautiful plains, more beautiful forests, habited by vast amounts of animals. You spot a couple of rivers and soon follow them, soon you arrive to a beautiful hill - inside, you see a cave, stacked with resources; however, soon, you realise you have a huge problem, you hear tales of how you have been cut off from the land you came, never being able to get back, knowing you are in a lovely land near a beautiful hill, you think you’ll be okay - shortly as time passes, you realise otherwise, you begin to worry, this beautiful land, this heartland, fall apart, shortly you hear news of a submarine slide coming from north, you panic, this landslide - the Storegga slide, falls upon the lands and apparently wipes out the north, you panic, not knowing where to escape, you could look further west, possibly being even more stuck, cut off and to die, or stay, where you have chances of survival. Quickly the storegga slide meets a settlement nearby, you panic, quickly moving west. You find yourself on more rocky, hilly, forestry lands and you realise you have left Doggerland. You hear tales of the last land falling over time to sea levels, you know that you have lost your home, your heartland.

Doggerland: The aftermath

With Doggerland gone, we now see a separation between Britain and Benelux, being vital for the future of Great Britain. Doggerland is now known as Dogger Bank - a very shallow area in the North Sea being from 13-60 metres in depth. This area was once Doggerland. We believe that Doggerland is slowly going to get deeper and deeper, however, restoration projects from the Netherlands have so far been proven relatively successful.!

Conclusion:

Doggerland has sunken and there is nothing we can do to change that. Scientific research have discovered that Doggerland was one of the most rich places in Europe. Now Doggerland remains a mystery to the world - however, your ancestors - yes, your ancestors probably lived in Doggerland for a brief period of time.!

Possible inspiration for Tolkien's West Beleriand?
