JetPunk #1 Daily Hits
Hey quiz takers! It's that time of year: year-end data! This year the most taken quiz was... Countries of the World! But what other quizzes topped the leaderboard? What are the shining pinnacles of quiz-ness that dominated the leaderboard for a day? Buckle up, quiz-aroos, here are:
The #1 hit quizzes of 2024!
Quiz: Countries of the World
Takes: 25,266
Date: November 21
Maker: Quizmaster
Genre: Meisterwerk
Description: It's the lifeblood of the site, stealing people's attention for a moment and suckering in many geography nerds to months or years of J'Punking.
Note: This is an increase of over 2,000 from last year's 23,195 high score on March 1. Hurray!
Link: you don’t need one.
Random Europe Capitals Mystery Route
Takes: 15,336
Date: January 3
Maker: Elboy
Genre: Advanced-SVG Text - Geography
Description: Woah!!! Elboy is laying down a gauntlet right at the beginning of the year! This quiz has amazing SVG style and works seamlessly. This quiz encourages many takes by being just generally amazing but being speedrun helps a lot. As you remember from last year, speedrun quizzes generally do quite well since a lot of users will run out of time and want to take the quiz "just one more time". It also helps that this quiz's answers are random, so the quiz has endless retake value. I can't imagine a better quiz topping the leaderboard this year. This one is certainly better than the quiz with the most daily takes...
Note: For the record, Elboy is doing amazing things with SVG. Check them out! And don't be intimidated by the French quizzes... remember, you can filter by language.
The Only Two Countries...
Takes: 15,523
Date: January 15
Maker: Quizmaster
Genre: Text - Geography
Description: QM is laying down the gauntlet. He has two different quizzes that have led the daily takes leaderboard now. Can anyone compete with QM? This is one of the few traditional text quizzes to top the leaderboard all year. Almost all the top quizzes were either speedruns or had some sort of gimmick. Not this one; it's a name the country quiz! It's an interesting premise, though, where every hint has two possible answers. It's surely an instant classic!
Note: This is the Quizmaster's second quiz to top the leaderboard this year. Keep it up!
Find The Mystery Country By Hints
Takes: 24,871
Date: February 13
Maker: ThatOneGuy25
Genre: Advanced-SVG Text - Geography
Description: What a creative quiz! It rewards all of us geography nerds who have learned the world map on JetPunk, and adds a bit of a game to the process. This quiz would be absolutely amazing if it were randomized, but that would take a LOT of work and probably a lot of scripting. Fortunately, I had forgotten the mystery country by the time I made this blog, so I got to experience this a second time! My first time I lucked out and got the mystery country very quickly--this time, I had to go through 6 or 7 countries before getting it right. Fun stuff!
20 Random Countries on an Empty World Map
Takes: 11,718
Date: April 6
Maker: Quizzer6794
Genre: Advanced-SVG Text - Geography
Description: A popular geography quiz! The skill here is to identify countries based solely on their country shapes and their location on the globe, with no context of the countries around them. Of course, it's easy if you happen to get Russia, Mexico, and Canada. It gets a little trickier when you have a country that looks like it's vaguely in central Asia. Is it a Stan? Which one!? With just 2 minutes, you have to keep up a good pace to finish in time! I love these quizzes that slightly chagne the tried and true JetPunk CotW map and test slightly different knowledge. My best time is 0:58, but I bet some of you can crack 30 seconds pretty easily!
Note: This is during Spring Break in a lot of places, and it's also on a Saturday. The double whammy that really caused this quiz to get less takes than it deserves!
Countries by Languages in 90 Seconds
Takes: 18,257
Date: April 2
Maker: scambigol
Genre: Standard SVG Text - Geography Speedrun
Description: I've always found it very satisfying to have dozens of answers awarded for a single type-in. This quiz, obviously, scratches that itch perfectly. After the big five languages, it becomes a scramble to type every European language and the handful of other major languages that are spoken in multiple countries. I've never been able to crack 5 points, since the timer is just 1:30! Of course, as I'm sure you know if you read last year's blog, these speedy quizzes are perfect for encouraging quiz takes, since people will take them many times, potentially. I mean, I've done this quiz multiple times and still haven't cracked 5 points! Maybe I'll go do it a few times now...
African Countries - Type the First Letter
Takes: 11,692
Date: April 6
Maker: Vicky
Genre: Standard SVG Text - Geography Speedrun
Description: What a fun quiz! Getting every African country by first letter in a minute and a half gives everyone much needed practice on one of the more neglected continents! I can say that doing it again while writing this blog, I aced it first attempt. It took me 8 tries to get all of them back in April! Therefore, it must be fun and educational! Plus, it's short and sweet, giving increased replay value. Kudos!
Click Chain
Takes: 22,532
Date: April 9
Maker: Dimby
Genre: Click - General Knowledge
Description: It's a click quiz! The first of the year to top the leaderboard! Oh... and also the first non-geography quiz. This is definitely a geography site... anyway, back to this 'quiz'. Well, it encourages multiple takes, as missing a single answer might mess up the whole chain. That might make some people just hit refresh on the quiz rather than completing it. Something about this quiz just seems... OK. It's an OK quiz, I guess. Not much to say about it. Could be better. Pretty mid, I guess. It has problems. I don't care for it. I hate it! Take it away!
European Countries - Type the First Letter
Takes: 22,091
Date: April 23
Maker: Vicky
Genre: Standard SVG Text - Geography Speedrun
Description: What a great quiz! It has over a minute on the clock, at 1:15, so I'm sure most JetPunk regulars crack this on their first try no problem. It's so satisfying to fill the map in just one minute, though, that many 'Punkers would play this multiple times anyway. Plus, it has replay value for JetPunk initiates who might not know all the European countries yet. Simple, easy, and enjoyable, I understand why this got over 20k takes in one day.
Note: This is Vicky's second time atop the leaderboard this year!
Countries by First Two Letters and Borders in 30 Seconds
Takes: 18,573
Date: May 27
Maker: scambiandJerry
Genre: Standard SVG Text - Geography Speedrun
Description: It's a 30-second sprint! Just like last year, we can expect to see many quizzes that are short on time as this encourages retakes. This is a very short time limit, so it likely got some of the most retakes of any of the quizzes so far! This one is a ton of fun and took me a full ten attempts to get a perfect score. The biggest challenge was to get all those dang microstates!
Countries of Africa by Borders in 30 Seconds
Takes: 14,404
Date: June 21
Maker: Gamer1162
Genre: Standard SVG Text - Geography Speedrun
Description: Speed is the name of the game if you want lots of takes! It's just 30 seconds to accomplish a somewhat easy task for expert geographers. Most of the stalwarts can name all the countries of the world by location, but this quiz requires quickfire geographic knowledge of Africa. Like many of these "sprint" type quizzes, it's easy to get flustered and need a second or third attempt to get those sweet five points. This has been on the front page a couple times, though, and hasn't been updated since 2019! It still accumulates so many thousand takes because it's so satisfying to turn the whole continent green.
Count as High as You Can - 15 Second Sprint
Takes: 19,029
Date: July 2
Maker: Jerry928
Genre: Text - Speedrun
Description: The quintessential speed quiz! Who has even finished this thing? It's very... very hard to get all the way to 100 in just 15 seconds! And oh... I've tried. I have taken this quiz 61 times! And I actually refresh the page whenever I make a mistake so I bet its been a lot lot more than 61 times... I only took it once on July 2, though. The reason this quiz didn't crack 20,000 is simply that it's been on the front page before. Hold on... (2 minutes)... OK, my high score is still 82. I will never get to 100.
Note: This is the second quiz that is not strictly a geography quiz, and the first one that has literally nothing to do with geography!
Countries by Last Letter
Takes: 15,937
Date: July 3
Maker: quizzer96
Genre: Text - Geography
Description: Name a country (by JetPunk official name, of course) ending in each letter of the alphabet. What a fun idea. It is three minutes long, which means it's not just a speed test! These types of quizzes always give me a unique feeling... like I'm searching desperately for my keys in the knick-knack bowl and it just doesn't seem like it's there. and then suddenly... VIETNAM!!! I found it fun but surprisingly stressful, and I can see why people took several attempts to complete it!
Note: It's the second geography text quiz that doesn't have an SVG at all to top the leaderboard.
The Only Country ...
Takes: 13,376
Date: July 31
Maker: gassu
Genre: Text - Geography
Description: You have 22 prompts that apply to only one country in the world. You're lulled into a sense of ease with the first question being easy about a city-state. You might at first think 6:00 is awfully generous for just 22 questions. But, oh boy! This quiz has a great variety of prompts and will certainly make most geography nerds have to guess multiple times for a few of the questions. This is just well researched and well thought out. Nicely done!
Note: Another text-based quiz to top the leaderboard! That's 4 total, and 3 geography quizzes without SVG's.
Click a Valid Country A-Z
Takes: 17,254
Date: August 9
Maker: BolyaiAnna
Genre: Click Map - Geography
Description: Just one minute to click the starting letter of the highlighted countries on the world map. What a genius idea. Finding innovative ways to use JetPunk's native tools is something I really respect, and BolyaiAnna's idea here is superb. It's a time crunch, but it's entirely fair since all you're doing is clicking one letter. Recognizing the group of questions is usually pretty easy, but then a few letters get tricky and before you know it, you're hesitating on every letter and the timer ticks down. Like many quizzes with a lot of takes, this is all about speed, and it probably takes most people a couple tries to get a perfect score. Exquisite fun. The 4.97 rating of this quiz is well deserved.
Note: During summer, JetPunk suffers lower quiz taking (less need for procrastination!). This is the highest number of takes for a user quiz in the middle of summer (or any summer quiz, I think).
Note #2: This is the only map quiz that topped the leaderboard all year.
Logical Elimination Click Quiz: Numbers
Takes: 15,030
Date: August 21
Maker: Elboy
Genre: Click - Logic/Puzzle
Description: What a masterpiece of logic! One of the few non-geography quizzes to do extremely well for daily takes. And it's not a 30-second speed run, it's a full 4:00 quiz. Often, a quiz with many takes is short and forces re-takes because it's a speed game. This quiz, on the other hand, has users picking off numbers, one by each. This creates a sense of satisfaction with every eliminated number. This is clearly mapped out to ensure a good user experience. Kudos!
Note: This is Elboy's second time atop the daily list, and the second click quiz to achieve the top spot.
Note #2: This is the only logic puzzle to top the leaderboard.
Countries With More Than 100 Million People
Takes: 9,606
Date: September 7
Maker: nichster
Genre: Text - Geography
Description: It is a necessary quiz for a geography quiz website. Countries with over 100 million was modified to add Vietnam which has passed the 100-million barrier. I don't have much to say about this quiz... It's an oldie but a goodie that most diehard Punkers had done quite a few times already.
Note: This Saturday quiz was the lowest number of takes to top the daily leaderboard.
40 Random Missing Countries on the World Map
Takes: 27,221
Date: September 26
Maker: ergillo
Genre: Advanced-SVG Text - Geography
Description: What a great take on the traditional country naming format! Rather than highlighting the countries, making them just invisible is a great twist for us over-countried geography nerds. I definitely understand why this had so many takes. It's random, and it's SO HARD! I've never had good visual scanning skills (spot the difference pages in my childhood puzzle books were an ordeal), and this quiz adds that skill on top of geography knowledge. I haven't cracked 5 points on this one after several tries. I maybe never will. A super hard quiz with only 2:20 definitely encourages many, many takes.
Win the U.S. Presidential Election
Takes: 34,373
Date: November 5
Maker: HinesBrothers
Genre: Standard SVG Text: Geography
Description: You have 30 seconds to win the American Presidential election! What a random day for this quiz... I wonder why this quiz got so many takes on November 5, 2024. Well, some of it is definitely me. I took it 28 times! I generally performed a little worse than Kamala in most attempts, but fortunately the rules of the election changed to allow us an extra ten seconds this go around!
2024: the easiest year to win an election. I love these quick quizzes that are a mix of typing skill and recall speed. Yeah, I could easily name all the states in two minutes and never stall out and panic... but in 30 seconds? The brain just turns to mush! Anyway, great quiz!
Note: Nothing could compete with the CotW quiz for all of October!
Note:This is the second most takes that any quiz got this year, and the most that a non-Sudden-Death quiz got.
Red, White, & Blue Flags - Sudden Death
Takes: 17,804
Date: November 16
Maker: jack541
Genre: Sudden Death - Flags
Description: Sudden Death?! It's a new format! Wow, these quizzes get a lot of takes. Unfortunately, flags are my kryptonite. Of all the many things I've learned from JetPunk and my many years of fascination with trivia, flags just never seem to stick anywhere in my brain. I have done this quiz several times and just cannot crack double digits. Embarrassing, I know. Still, this is a fun quiz and really works to get your brain's video processor going. Maybe one day I will be able to ace this thing. Do this quiz over and over until you get a perfect score, lest you be a wretch like me who doesn't know flags by colours.
Note: This is the first Sudden Death quiz to top the leader board, and the first one EVER on the front page!
Note: This is the only flag-knowledge-based quiz to top the leaderboard all year.
True or False - Sudden Death
Takes: 15,787
Date: November 17
Maker: Stewart
Genre: Sudden Death - General Knowledge
Description: It's sudden death, but true/false! It's a shame that it came out on Sunday, because this is one of my favourite uses of the Sudden Death format. It's creative and goes beyond just a list of things. Honestly, I could see this being a 100-quiz-long series, and I would definitely take all of them. As someone who uses my phone to do JetPunk quizzes a lot, I definitely appreciate the simplicity and neatness of this format. I hope to see many more creative quizzes using the Sudden Death feature (of course, the minesweeper game, spot the differences, and other creative uses have been great, too).
Note: This is the second day in a row where a sudden-death quiz topped the CotW quiz!
Note: This is the second general knowledge quiz to top the leaderboard.
Capital Cities - Sudden Death
Takes: 37,118
Date: November 20
Maker: Dimby
Genre: Sudden Death - Geography
Description: What? Another Sudden Death quiz? Well, this looks like a pretty mid quiz, just clicking on capital cities versus non-capitals. But the cities seem pretty randomly chosen without much thought. I didn't chuckle once and none of the options really made me think--except Cape Town, which is only one of the capitals of South Africa, which obviously just causes unfair confusion. Plus, some people say that the quiz left off the diacritic on São Paulo when first released. So disrespectful. Still, it does its job well enough, and I guess was a feature-able quiz. It's interesting to see Sudden Death quizzes "popping off" so much. It makes sense, of course, since the sudden death encourages multiple takes.
Notes: This was the most takes a quiz got in a single day in the year.
Countries that Use the Euro - Sudden Death
Takes: 27,584
Date: November 23
Maker: jack541
Genre: Sudden Death - Geography
Description: It is a Sudden Death quiz. I think we are seeing a pattern! I grinded this one pretty hard before it was featured and the stats reset, but I think I probably did it about a dozen times before I managed to get a perfect score. And the educational aspect worked, because I remembered the answers on my first attempt after the stats reset! This is a great use of the Sudden Death feature, and it definitely gave me a lot of tension as I got to the last few that I wasn't too sure on!
This is jack541's second time atop the daily leaderboard! Nicely done jack541!
European Capitals - Sudden Death
Takes: 26,690
Date: November 27
Maker: jack541
Genre: Sudden Death - Geography
Description: It's another Sudden Death quiz! The new format is topping the leaderboard regularly, which makes sense since it encourages users to take each quiz multiple times if they trip the sudden death detectors. I didn't find this one very hard because JetPunk has thoroughly reinforced the European capitals in my brain over the years, as did my Grade 11 Social Studies teacher, Mr. Braun. This is a great quiz, though, and some of the false options are awfully tempting!
This is jack541's third time atop the daily leaderboard, and his second in only 5 days!
NATO Members - Sudden Death
Takes : 21,730
Date: November 29
Maker: jack541
Genre: Sudden Death - Geography/History/...Geopolitics?
Description: jack541 strikes again! And another sudden death quiz. This one isn't too, too hard, but those last few countries surely tripped a lot of people up. I know I took 4 tries before I got all those pesky Slavic/Eastern European countries right! It's a great use of the sudden death format, again, and certainly taught several thousand people whether Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, and such are in NATO.
This is jack541's fourth time atop the daily leaderboard! Nicely done jack541!
Smallest 25 U.S. States - Sudden Death
Takes: 29,828
Date: December 2
Maker: WolfCam
Genre: Sudden Death - Geography
Description: Another Sudden Death quiz! I personally found this one awfully tricky. I was amazed that Ohio is nowhere near as large as I thought it was. Like a lot of Sudden Death quizzes, this encourages many takes because it is just hard enough to justify taking it 10 times to finally get that 25/25! I'm not sure what else there is to say about this one... go play it and see if you can still remember the answers!
China's Neighbours - Sudden Death
Takes: 28,443
Date: December 10
Maker: Dimby
Genre: Sudden Death - Geography
Another sudden death quiz! It's like a cheat code to get on top of the daily takes board. At least China has a whopping 14 neighbours, making this quiz somewhat interesting. Bangladesh and Thailand are just such tricky false answers. Still, I wonder if the quiz maker had ever heard of alphabetical order! I mean, that might force quiz takers to learn the countries instead of just the pattern of correct tiles, but I think this quiz maker might be jumping on the bandwagon a bit too hard. I feel like this was done before, anyway.
U.S. Presidents - Sudden Death
Takes: 15,861
Date: December 15
Maker: FreeStater
Genre: Sudden Death - History
What a busy month! Over a 30-day period, this is the 9th quiz to beat the Countries of the World Quiz! Again, it's a sudden-death quiz, and it's another clearly great idea for the format. Most of us know the presidents of the world pretty well from doing US Presidents quizzes on the site, so this is a nice addition for we regular JetPunkers. It's surprisingly easy to mess up, too, with some well-chosen fake answers in there.
Countries With a Population Under 1 Million - Sudden Death
Takes: 23,846
Date: December 19
Maker: Marli5
Genre: Sudden Death - Geography
The month of Sudden Death continues! This one is particularly tricky. I, for one, took 5 attempts to get a perfect score. It's the perfect use of the format, really--not very interesting for a text quiz, since you could just spam all the small countries. That feeling of tapping a country where you're not quite sure is quite the rush. Iceland? Suriname? Jamaica? And like most of the best quizzes, half the answers are pretty obvious to give quiz takers confidence and make them want to complete the quiz! Also, I clicked on Namibia instead of Suriname when I took this quiz again to write the blog. It's so tricky!!!
Memory Test - Sudden Death
Takes: 30,040
Date: December 20
Maker: overtired
Genre: Sudden Death - Memory
The creativity of the Sudden Death format is off the charts here (I mean, I guess it's literally on the charts, but you get what I mean). This quiz maker has done quite a few innovative things with Sudden Death, and I recommend you check them out. I linked another one I found particularly impressive and aesthetically pleasing. Yes, even during the goldrush where users wildly put out the most obvious quizzes to try to get featured, this user elevated the format. Kudos. Anyway, it's a memory game. I don't think there's much to say other than it's a lot of fun and has tons of replay value. I have taken it 19 times, and I imagine that I'll take it quite a few more times in the future!
Conclusion
Top Quiz Types
There were 11 (eleven!) sudden death quizzes that topped the leaderboard this year. They regularly got huge takes. I'd be interested to see how many unique quiz-takers actually took each quiz. I bet Sudden Death's numbers would suffer a lot when only looking at unique users--but it's sure a fun format, nonetheless.
There were 6 quizzes that I would call "Standard" SVG quizzes, since the SVG was more or less the same as the JetPunk standard.
There were only 4 quizzes that I would call advanced SVG/CSS quizzes. They were fairly early in the year, so we haven't had a lot of advanced-SVG #1 hits for a few months. I hope this isn't a trend; hopefully new quiz makers arise who can help keep our site looking beautiful with advanced SVGs.
There were 2 click quizzes that topped the leaderboard, and neither of them were geography!
There was only 1 map quiz this year, but it was a great one, at least.
Lower your head in respect for Picture quizzes and Tile quizzes. They didn't have a #1 hit. Tile is in particularly rough shape.
Top Quiz Genres
Geography quizzes continue to dominate JetPunk with 21 #1 hit quizzes. Not surprising, since it's primarily a geography trivia site. The Marquis Quiz is a geography quiz after all.
There were 21 geography quizzes.
There were 5 speedrun quizzes (by my definition).
There were 2 General Knowledge quizzes.
There was 1 Logic quiz.
There was 1 History quiz.
Final Note
Last year, all the top daily quizzes that surpassed Countries of the World were quick quizzes; most of them speedrun quizzes (which I arbitrarily have decided is either: 90 seconds or faster; or a quiz that is virtually impossible to finish in the allotted time. This year, short quizzes weren't quite so dominant. Perhaps longform quizzes are getting more popular.
There was a general increase in takes this year over last year. The Countries of the World quiz topped out in November at 25,266. The #1 day for a quiz this year was higher than last year. A WHOPPING 30 (as of December 20) quizzes have been atop the leaderboard. That's more than twice as many as last year! While some of that was Sudden Death, there are still twenty quizzes that beat the Countries of the World Quiz throughout the year. I think that means we have more regulars than last year AND we have more site traffic in general, based on the CotW having higher takes (which has been verified by Stewart's 2024 In Review blog which was published as I was finishing this blog up). Well done, JetPunkers. Here's to an equally successful 2025!
love click chain
Well, I can raise a glass to that. Cheers to " "
That's what happens when you don't copy/paste carefully!
interestingly, the one that hasn't been on the FP yet is getting more takes daily and is still on that page
