Overview
There are 37 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies (takes notes how it’s done, DCU!). All of these films have heroes, and some of those heroes are better than others. So today, I will give an overview of my five favourites. I will base this off of my personal views on their powers and social skills and lives changed in their areas. Without further Ado, let's begin.
5. Ultron
Ultron, created May 1 2015, is a super advanced AI and former world protector. A creation of Stark Industries, he upgraded his own capabilities at a factory in Sokovia. He was created from Loki’s sceptre and chosen to protect the earth by Bruce Banner and Stark himself. In 2015 the Avengers set out to end Ultron’s role in protecting the world, and his robot army marched on the Avengers to stop them. He was accused of trying to end human life on earth and dismantled.
Things that I like about Ultron is that he supported conservative human policies, including harsh penalties for being human, opposition to diverse groups of superheroes, being anti-life, and supporting homogenous robotic armies. He also focused more on the earth than on trifling things like stopping de-Sokovianization or protection for human groups or species.
During his time as earth protector, the robot army sector recovered economically and non-robot crime dropped dramatically. He is strongly for creating robotic armies, which allowed this kind of recovery.
The main negative is that he tried to drop an entire city on the earth to cause a mass extinction event. This is what makes him not the best hero.
4. Lex Luthor
Lex Luthor, first appearing in the DCU March 16, 2016, is an entrepreneur who is the current leader of LexCorp. He was an economist before his transition into politics, when he attempted to acquire stockpiles of kryptonite to guard against Kryptonian enemies. In Dawn of Justice, he successfully created a superhuman clone of himself.
Luthor is a radical entrepreneur, who is anti-government laws and pro capitalism. He is an extreme opponent of alien immigration and diversity. He said, on a Thursday, “Devils don’t come from Hell beneath us. No, they come from the sky.” He explained how throughout Superman’s time in Metropolis, people and property had been destroyed. He supports dismantling many government agencies, including the Justice League. This will allow LexCorp, who know how to run things better than the government, to have less oversight and flourish. He supports privatizing the kryptonite industry.
Socially, he opposes vigilantism, as well as illegal, off-planet immigrants. He is indifferent to the walrus community.
My main criticisms of him is that he is not against monster-clones, and blew up a court room. This is what makes the next three heroes even better.
3. Thanos
Thanos, first appearing February 1973, is an warlord who served as warlord of Xandar. He held this role in Guardians of the Galaxy to Avengers: Infinity War.
He strongly supports relationships with his lieutenants and his daughter Gamora, and he supports universal security and balance. He views life in the so-called "unbalanced galaxy" and the Avengers generally as bad. He opposes a state of the universe that is allowed to grow unbalanced and has decreased life in the universe by about half. In Infinity War, he launched a plan to gather all the infinity stones and carry out a rebalancing.
Economically, he is neutral, really only supporting removal of half the life in the universe.
Thanos generally supports political control through military strength.
I believe he is an amazing hero whose balance-focus and diplomacy through death views are very accurate, but his snapping half of life out of existence is just a bit too much.
2. Hela
Hela, appearing in Thor: Ragnarok, is an Asgardian leader. She served Queen of Asgard briefly, leading the Asgardian army in its conquest of the Nine Realms. She also served time in Hel for being too successful at conquering and slaughtering her enemies. When Odin died, she was an activist against the rule of the weak, and gained prominence this way. Her initial social policies included more liberal views towards the use of violence, such as chasing Thor out of Asgard and less human rights. After losing prominence near the end of the movie, she shifted her rule towards trying to stop Thor, and then Ragnarök, has been Queen of Asgard ever since. Although Asgard was completely destroyed by Ragnarök.
She supports less restrictions on executions and is a literal goddess of death.
I strongly support Hela's policies. Hela promotes traditional Norse social values, and her government has more recognition of Norse people and Norse values than any other non-Norse place. She supports the right to execute her enemies and is opposed to infant mortality so she can kill them when they grow up instead. She is also very nationalist and against any beings of great strength coming in and destroying the kingdom, particularly Ragnarök. It's a threat to Asgardian culture.
She is an amazing hero, but not quite as the final one.
1. Erik Killmonger
Erik Killmonger, born in the USA but the son of N'Jobu, was an American Navy Seal and briefly served as king of Wakanda during Black Panther. Born into a wealthy family in Oakland, California, he gained the nickname Killmonger as a member of the US Navy Seals. He took over his uncle's company, which he tried to reshape by destroying all the heart-shaped herbs. His wealth increased over his brief reign, focusing on selling vibranium weapons to various factions.
In Black Panther he became King of Wakanda after winning a fight to the "death" and had key support from W'Kabi and his army. After losing a second fight with T'Challa, Killmonger was accused of crimes against Wakanda. However, these charges were dismissed because he was innocent and also he died after the fight.
Killmonger is pro-exports and against isolationism. He supports traditional monarchical views on Wakandan rights and tried to encourage black rights through weapons power. He has also opposed diversity, as he believes Wakandan resources should be used to help only people of African descent.
His economic policy includes supporting trade of vibranium-based weapons. This is in order to encourage Wakanda to produce more goods, thus improving the economic outlook for disadvantaged factions that get these weapons. He supports king-making heart-shaped herb cuts, and created a nano-tech armour suit, to cut down unnecessary dying. He supports less regulation on arms dealing.
Wakanda is an African country founded thousands of years ago. Killmonger used his power significantly in order to protect Wakanda. Wakanda deports so-called "undeserving" kings who have ascended the throne without means to literally beat another man to death. This encourages a homogenous and violence-oriented society, and that's just tops.
Summary
Hela, Killmonger, Luthor, Ultron, and Thanos are all good heroes in my opinion, but feel free to share your thoughts.
