End Of The Roadmap

+5

Premise

I have completed all items on my JetPunk roadmap. This includes creating all quizzes in the Biggest Cities by Decade series based on Ollie Bye's "The Largest Cities Throughout History: Each Year", making charts for the most popular songs in USA series & year-end lists, making quizzes of the most popular songs each month in the 70s for Pontiac, and manually verifying the sales, streams, and radio airplay data of all the quizzes in my "Popular Songs in the USA" series that have that data.

Album Challenge

I've never listened to a full-length studio album despite being a fan of music, so I'm going to listen to 50 albums from each of these genre categories: rap & R&B, pop & EDM, country & folk, and rock & alternative. I will create one blog for each genre category after I've listened to all of the albums in that category at least once. After all four genre category blogs have been created, I'll listen to all of the albums again and make a final ranking blog to end the challenge. I will listen to re-releases of albums, such as deluxe versions. For deluxe versions, I will listen to the bonus tracks after listening to the original tracklist.

Challenge Requirements

For an album to qualify for this challenge, it must:

1. Be listed on Wikipedia as matching an eligible genre

2. Be a studio album, a compilation album that includes no songs that are on any of the artist's studio albums, or a film soundtrack

3. Be available on streaming platforms as a whole, or be on Wikipedia with a listed tracklist and have all songs available to listen to on YouTube

4. Must be originally in English or have an official English translation; no K-pop albums, J-pop albums, etc. without English translations

For certain controversial artists, I will watch third-party lyric videos on YouTube instead of listening to the music from the artist's page

Album Reccomendations Period

I will wait a week for recommendations before I look at streaming metrics & ranked lists to fill-out the lists.

All four categories are filled so if you want to recommend a new album, you also have to recommend an album to replace it.

I will not replace:

"I'm The Problem" by Morgan Wallen

"Man's Best Friend" by Sabrina Carpenter

"SWAG" by Justin Bieber

These albums will not be released because they are popular and were released in 2025

That’s uh… a lot of Drake. I’d throw Madvillainy on there personally, but then I am eclectic and listen to many different types of music.

Anyway, for blues I recommend Miles Davis - Kind of Blue. Another album that literally no one else would ever recommend is Lead Belly - The Midnight Special and Other Southern Prison Songs. Nice and short but has a few very catcher bangers.

For Jazz, Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out is amazing, and has one of the best jazz songs ever done. Anything by Louis Armstrong is generally great.

Modern rock, I recommend any album by The Strokes, Arcade Fire, White Stripes, and I think TV Girl albums are about 80% great and have 20% weird pretentious artsy stuff.

Oh and for actual folk, I think Peter Paul and Mary have a couple good albums, but Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger are the best.

Beatles in two categories ? I wouldn't have placed them in Country and Folk at all tbh.

If I may make some suggestions for the Rock category.

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds

Hello by Status Quo

Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf

I'm not sure if any of these albums meet your criteria, but they are all excellent examples in my humble opinion.

Wikipedia lists those albums as folk & folk takes priority over rock, but if those albums were not listed as folk, then I would've added them to rock

since probably no one else is going to be recommending country:

Diamonds & Gasoline by Turnpike Troubadours

A Long Way From Your Heart by Turnpike Troubadours (this was the album that got me into country)

Stick Season by Noah Kahan (more folk but still very good)

Cardinal by Pinegrove

The Magnolia Electric Co. by Songs: Ohia

Tennessee by Lucero

The Limestone Kid by Parker McCollum

Sackcloth n' Ashes by Sixteen Horsepower

Trace by Son Volt

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco

Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen (also folk but an all time classic)

Imaginary Appalachia by Colter Wall

The Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse (indie rock but essentially an alt country record)

Metamodern Sounds in Country Music by Sturgill Simpson

Purgatory by Tyler Childers

March 16-20, 1992 by Uncle Tupelo

Harvest Moon by Neil Young

Gunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs by Marty Robbins

Southeastern by Jason Isbell

Endless Oklahoma Sky by John Moreland

Garage by Cross Canadian Ragweed

At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash

Agree with above comment about The Beatles not being country or folk. There's some classics I didn't include but I wanted to go mostly with stuff you might miss on a mainstream all time list and a fairly good variety (make sure to get some Dylan on there too, you can't go wrong with any of his albums).

Also even as a fan of Morgan Wallen you're not going to want or need to hear more than Dangerous everything past that is slop with a handful of good tracks thrown in

And I highly recommend Zach Bryan's DeAnn (I know you already have some of his albums on here but this one is pretty distinct from his newer stuff and leans a lot more into indie folk and singer-songwriter and they're all worth a listen anyway)

And you should listen to Spiderland by Slint and Wildlife by La Dispute. Two best rock records of all time by a pretty wide margin.

I'm not sure if the repeats for artists like Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, and Lil Wayne are some of your favorites, which is why you have so many albums listed, but I'd personally diversify your lists with more artists.

My recommendations come from half my own opinion and how seminal I think they are to the genres.

I'm not huge into R&B and Hip Hop, but I'd recommend:

License to Ill - Beastie Boys

Straight Outta Compton - N.W.A.

The Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest

Things Fall Apart - The Roots

Voodoo - D'Angelo

Be - Common

Rodeo - Travis Scott

IGOR - Tyler, the Creator

Lemonade - Beyoncé

After Hours - The Weeknd

This gives you a good variety from the 80s to the 10s with some R&B, neo-soul, and hip-hop elements

I think pop is pretty solid for the most part I probably have less recommendations here but still:

Discovery - Daft Punk

Faith - George Michael

Imaginal Disk - Magladena Bay

Like a Virgin - Madonna

In The Zone - Britney Spears

Good Girl Gone Bad - Rihanna

Also Lady Gaga is one of my favorite pop singers, don't listen to anything past ArtPop besides Mayhem, it's not worth it.

Jeremy's country list works very well. I'd add some more folk that he doesn't include:

Songs of Leonard Cohen - Leonard Cohen

Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited & Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan (Trilogy of albums)

Sail Away - Randy Newman

John Prine - John Prine

Townes Van Zandt - Townes Van Zandt

Pink Moon - Nick Drake

Jolene - Dolly Parton

Late For the Sky - Jackson Browne

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

Strait to the Heart - George Strait

Killin' Time - Clint Black

Many of these are 60s to 80s, but Jeremy covers a lot of the basis

I'm familiar with a lot of rock, so I'm most confident in these:

Elvis' Golden Records - Elvis Presley (Compilation)

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV

Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones

The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground

The Doors - The Doors

Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie

For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music

Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

The Stranger - Billy Joel

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Ramones - Ramones

London Calling - The Clash

Remain in Light - Talking Heads

Back in Black - AC/DC

Murmur - R.E.M.

Master of Puppets - Metallica

Joshua Tree - U2

Appetite for Destruction - GnR

Violator - Depeche Mode

Grace - Jeff Buckley

Nevermind - Nirvana

OK Computer - Radiohead

The Colour & the Shape - Foo Fighters

American Idiot - Green Day

Is This It - The Strokes

Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay

White Pony - Deftones

Brand New Eyes - Paramore

This gives you a great variety of the major genres in rock from the 60s to the 2000s.

If you want a good overview of The Beatles catalogue and to avoid overlapping songs, I would recommend sticking to the British releases, since the American ones are often just mixed up tracklistings of those. Introducing... The Beatles is mostly the same as Please Please Me while Meet The Beatles takes tracks from several of their early albums. I would recommend skipping those and replacing it with the With The Beatles album, which would prevent any overlapping and give you a complete idea of their catalogue (besides their singles, which I would also recommend hearing alongside the albums).

Otherwise, I don't have much of an opinion since I'm not too interested in most of what you have planned, though if you have any interest in more underground indie, emo, and punk music, do let me know
