Crosswords - What Are They?

+16

Introduction

This blog has been written as a celebration for my Crossword Puzzles quiz series reaching 100,000 (and 200,000) total takes. It is a bit delayed. Thank you, and enjoy!

Following over 20 crossword quizzes and 200,000 takes on them, I have decided to write an informative blog about them.

This blog will explain what crosswords are, where to find them, the history of crosswords, and the different designs and types of crosswords. I have also added a section about my own story, as a JetPunk quizmaker of crosswords.

What are crosswords?

A crossword is a word puzzle featuring a grid of black and white squares. Each white square is reserved for a letter, while black squares act as dividers between words. Alongside the grid is a list of clues sorted between "across" and "down". This relates to the direction which the answer is placed in the grid - either written horizontally or vertically.

The first white square of each word in the grid is usually numbered - this number corresponds to the clues found in the list. Some white squares are part of an across and a down clue. For example, 1 Across and 1 Down both start from the same white square.

Crosswords are usually found with a square or rectangular grid, which often have rotational symmetry (180°) - if the grid is turned upside down, it will still have the same design.

Crosswords come in several sizes, however the most common sizes are 15x15 and 13x13. Sometimes novelty crosswords can be found in larger and smaller sizes, as well as in different shapes, such as a Christmas tree.

Crosswords usually use a wide variety of topics within clues, such as geography, sports, entertainment and general knowledge. However, some crosswords, especially around national holidays, are often themed. For example, crosswords could be themed around Christmas, have all words beginning with the same letter, about a certain topic or interest like science, or even have answers as numbers!

Where are crosswords found?

Crosswords are most notably found in newspapers and magazines, such as the New York Times or The Guardian.

Crosswords are commonly found in puzzle books which offer a variety of puzzles, such as sudoku and wordsearches. Additionally, some puzzle books are exclusively made for crosswords.

There are numerous websites and apps for taking crosswords. Most notably are The New York Times' Crossword and Mini Crossword.

History of Crosswords

Recreation of Arthur Wynne's crossword, from 1913.

It is thought that one of the first crossed word puzzles dates back to the Rotas-Sator Square from before 62 AD.

The phrase "cross word puzzle" was first written in 1862, in the Our Young Folks children's magazine. Puzzles similar to crosswords featured in magazines in the late-19th century.

On 21 December 1913, British-born journalist Arthur Wynne published a "word-cross puzzle" in the New York World newspaper. This is often credited as the first crossword puzzle, with Wynne cited as the inventor. An illustrator reversed this to "cross-word".

Crosswords quickly spread to other newspapers, with the Pittsburgh Press and The Boston Globe featuring them soon after.

The first crossword puzzle book was published in 1924 by Simon & Schuster.

The New York Times first published a crossword puzzle on 15 February 1942, as it was assumed the puzzle could be a distraction from the news of World War II. Originally edited by Margaret Farrar, later editors of the NYT puzzle were Will Weng, Eugene T. Maleska and Will Shortz.

Main Designs of Crosswords

Crosswords come in many different shapes, sizes and designs. Listed below are the most common designs of regular crosswords.

American Crosswords

In American Crosswords, every letter is part of an across and down clue (also known as "checked" squares).

Black squares tend to be minimal - forming about one-sixth of all squares.

The New York Times Crossword is one of the most notable crosswords using the American Crossword style.

However, with trying to fit words both across and down, creating American crosswords is much harder. This is why abbreviations, foreign words, initialisms and seemingly "random" words are included.

British Crosswords

In British Crosswords, many letters form part of either an across or down clue only. However, some letters do still fall in both an across and down clue.

Black squares are much more common, forming about 1/4 of all squares, however this can vary, with some black squares constituting up to half of all squares.

British Crosswords are easier to create, since there are less intersections. Abbreviations, initialisms and "random" words are much less common.

British Crossword design is commonly used in crossword variants, such as cryptic crosswords or codewords.

"Barred" Crosswords

Barred Crosswords (also known as Continuity Crosswords) are a design of crossword without any black squares. Instead, answers are separated by thick black lines or "bars". These bars often form a symmetrical pattern across the grid.

As the grid only has white squares, every square in the grid will have a letter once complete. This also means there would be more answers in the crossword.

Most letters in the grid are checked (have both across and down clues).

Common Variants of Crosswords

Due to the simplistic nature of crosswords, it is easy to create other similar puzzles. Here are some of the variants of crosswords, with different designs or operations:

Arrowword

Arrowword - the clues replace the usual black squares, and arrows show the direction of the word.

Arrowwords, also spelled as Arrowords or Arrow Words are a variant of crossword, where clues replace the black squares, and arrows in the grid indicate the direction which the word is placed. Sometimes, clues are replaced by pictures.

Arrowwords are very popular in Europe. They are often called 'Swedish or Scandinavian Crosswords', as they are thought to be invented in Sweden.

Codeword

A codeword, which usually features a grid, boxes for decoded letters, and an A-Z list to check off as you decode letters.

Codewords are a variant of crossword, where each square is given a number from 1-26, which represents a letter. Using starting letters, the solver must finish the puzzle by decoding the other letters. Every letter occurs in the puzzle at least once.

Common ways to solve these puzzles include locating where "QU" must appear (and another vowel afterwards), determining common letters ("e" is the most common letter in English) or looking for common endings, such as -ing, -s or -ed.

Criss-Cross

A Criss-Cross (or fill-in) puzzle, where the words or number sequences are given, and they need to be placed in the grid.

Criss-Cross (alternatively spelled Kriss-Kross) or Fill-in is a variant of crossword, similar to a wordsearch, where a list of words or number sequences (e.g. 12345) ordered by length need to be placed into the grid.

The grid is often not symmetrical, as this can lead to more flexibility with the answers.

Criss-crosses are deemed easier than crosswords, as no prior knowledge is required.

When starting a criss-cross, the best way is to start with the lengths with the lowest number of answers in the grid. For example, if "6" had two answers, start with that.

Cryptic Crosswords

American-style mini cryptic crossword

Cryptic Crosswords are a common variant of crosswords, using complex clues rather than simple definitions. Cryptic crosswords often use the British-style of crosswords, having originated in the United Kingdom.

Cryptic crossword clues are formed of a "definition" part (direct definition to the answer) and a "wordplay" part (how to piece words together). If this sounds confusing, here is an example:

7A) A mode of transport finally gone wrong

A (literally) + mode of transport = BUS + finally gone = E (last letter of gone); wrong = ABUSE (definition).

Cryptic crosswords are often seen as one of the hardest to complete; here is a guide on how to do them: https://thunderguy.com/bennett/2020/05/02/how-to-do-cryptic-crosswords/

Diagramless Crosswords

Diagramless or "Skeleton" Crossword, which usually features few black squares and clue numbers - this is for the solver to finish!

DiagramlessSkeleton or similarly named "Bare Bones" crosswords are a variant where the grid has most of the black squares and clue numbers missing. This makes them tricky, as the crossword solver must work out the answers to the clues, as well as where the other clue numbers and black squares go.

However, existing clue numbers in the grid may be helpful, as the square before an across or down clue must be a black square (unless it is against the edge).

Diagramless crosswords usually feature a degree of symmetry, sometimes with higher symmetry patterns. This can be an advantage to the solver.

Jigsaw Crosswords

Cryptic Crossword

Jigsaw crosswords or Piecewords feature a completed crossword grid which has been divided into 3x3 blocks. To solve the puzzle, you need to use the clues to piece together the blocks (like a jigsaw puzzle).

The grid may be numbered by row, as this corresponds to the "across" clues given. Occasionally, there are two "across" clues given for the same number, such as:

6 Quiz site • Double

For this example, on the 6th row, you could find the two answers as "JETPUNK" and "DUO". Using these clues, you need to find the blocks which would create "JETPUNK" and "DUO" on the 6th row.

My Story

This is my story of how I started creating my Crossword quizzes.

2022

On 22nd July 2022, during a conversation about puzzles on the JetPunk Discord server, I mentioned the fact that I would love to create crosswords, and indicating that they could even have some letters which formed a secret word.
Approximately two hours later, I had made a crossword within Excel. I asked whether it would be good to make it into a JetPunk quiz, in which a few people said to go for it.

My first quiz, Crossword - "A" Words was released the same day. After positive reception, Crossword - "S" Words was released the next day (I have no idea why "S" was the second one!). Over the next few days, "B" Words, "C" Words and "D" Words were released.

Following this, I chose to test out other crossword topics, including "JetPunk Discord Members" (now deleted quiz), released on 26th July 2022. This became a success. Over the next month, Crossword - "E" Words and Crossword - "F" Words were added to the series.

Between personal life and school, I managed to create:
My first message on the topic of crosswords - perhaps predicting the future of my quizzes?
First crossword I created - this became 'Crossword - "A" Words'!

2023

The series was continued in March 2023 with the additions of:
After a long break, due to exams, Crossword - Colours was released on 6th July.
Crossword - Colours: Probably one of the lowest average scores of any crossword quiz!

2024

Into 2024, the first crosswords created were: On 20th May 2024, the Crossword - Countries quiz was featured! Over the week after the feature, the series gained 3,000 takes. The Crossword - Countries quiz appeared on the front page on 25th July 2024. The series skyrocketed from 53,559 takes to 83,627 over the following week after the front page feature.

On 4th September 2024, the Crossword - Flags quiz was featured!

Later that month, on the 29th September 2024, the Crossword Puzzles series reached 100,000 takes. On the same day, the second edition of Crossword - Discord Members was released as a private quiz.
Series analytics for the "Crossword Puzzles" series by Fuse. This shows that, on the 29th September, the series reached 100,000 takes.

Collaboration with MasterRocket

In December 2024, I was asked by MasterRocket to create a crossword together. Since then, these following quizzes have been created together by MasterRocket and I: Will this collaboration continue? Most definitely!

On the day of this blog's release (8th October 2025), the Crossword Puzzles series consists of 24 crossword puzzles, and with two of these featured, this amounts to 200,000 takes!
Crossword - Christmas
Crossword - Love
Crossword - Easter
Crossword - Geography

Final Thoughts

After 100,000 takes on the crosswords series, I thought it would be great to pursue this idea for a blog. However, due to University and procrastination, it has taken over a year (and another 100,000 takes) for me to complete it.

If you have read this far, thank you so much for reading this blog - my first in over 3 years!

If you have a question for me about my journey, or about any individual quiz, let me know in the comments!
