The Guide for JetPunk Translators

+18

Hello guys, Gademotsili99 here!

Over the last few months, translating on JetPunk has really risen, in all languages, featured or not, with many people offering their services on helping people release quizzes in their language.

Being one of the first few people to mass-translate quizzes for other people, starting from December, I would like to advise newer translators with whatever I have learnt over time.

1.

Get the Chance to Translate

First of all, to translate a quiz for somebody else, you have to somehow get it from them. If it's not featured, you have to just ask them to make a copy of the quiz and collaborate it with you to translate. Also, before you start translating, always make sure that it's a copy and not the original, which would be very annoying.

Now, if it's featured, the best thing would be asking for permission if you want it in your account, or better yet, but sometimes unrealistically, offer to translate it for them. Some quizmakers may comply, others may just tell you to do it yourself anyways, especially if your language is not featured. If you get it in your account, you have to link at least the quiz or the original creator, or better yet, both. It really is an unwritten rule!

Only user you don't really need to ask for translating their quiz, is the Quizmaster himself. I can't be certain for many others though...

2.

Translation Itself

Now that you have the quiz, a good question might be how to go about it. Well, I can't offer advice on every single quiz, individually, but in all cases, you should be thorough and try your best to avoid any mistakes, since the more mistakes, the less the people trust you to translate more quizzes in the future, especially if the quiz gets called out.

With that in mind, if you aren't sure about an answer, don't think twice about using Wikipedia or some other trusted source.

I also would like to say that translators like DeepL can be used, in moderation, as a supplement, especially when you aren't sure about the perfect translation, but again, take all translations with a grain of salt. If anything, you should know your language better than the translator.

Also, DON'T. FORGET. THE. TYPE-INS.

3.

Description and Credits

When you are done with the answers, you can go ahead to the first step of every quiz, the title and the description and well... translate them, obviously!

Also, I am of the opinion that you should remove callings for similar quizzes or series that are in English, unless those very quizzes and series exist in your language too, where you can just replace the links themselves.

Lastly, you should always put credits in the quiz, but those can differ depending on the two different cases we talked about earlier. So...

• If the quiz is in your account, give credits to the OG creator and/or their quiz.

• If you are translating for another account, credit yourself saying in your language "Translation by Gademotsili99" or something similar anyways.

P.S. In credits you should always use hyperlinks, either to the OG creator's or your own's "user quizzes" page and to the original quiz.

4.

Miscellaneous

There are also other things to consider when one is an active translator and I would like to address them shortly here.

First and foremost, is time. Many will think that speed of finishing the project is essential and, while it can certainly help, in the cases of mass-translators, I think it is not obligatory. Everyone has their own free time and will to do something in a set time and I believe that a "slow" translator should never be called out, because at the end of the day, they are doing an important job in helping a whole community! So, no need to rush!

Additionally, the more translations one takes on, the more experience they get and with the more experience, less mistakes are bound to be repeated!

Lastly, as someone having been in that exact situation, I beg you. Please don't drown yourselves with too many projects in the same time. It is stressful and tiring to even think about!

Anyway, that was all. I hope you liked the blog and that it actually was useful for some people who are interested in helping with translations of quizzes of our favourite site, either being small creators or some of the most well known.

P.S. If I forgot anything important, please tell me

Εις το επανιδείν!

Nice blog, and it is nice to see more quizzes get translated. If I had to add anything I guess I personally would only recommend translating quizzes into a language you know well to some degree. If everyone just relied on translator tools and translated all their quizzes to 10s of languages JP would become a mess of sloppy, inconsistent translations which is unwanted.

Personally I'd only translate quizzes into Greek, since other than English it's the only language I know well. Use of translator tools should be as help and not as a crutch.

Make sure that if you are translating to a non-latin script, the only latin in your title isn't numbers because that might break the link

I don't want to spam posts asking for translators every time.

Most of my friend's can't really translate though to French/German.

I see. Idk in that case. Only a post. Unless you want to use translator ig... Like generally ask for people. There has to be at least one willing to translate

Great guide! This would've helped me when I started translating quizzes 3 years ago but now I'm glad that new users have the opportunity to become big in this platform.

Well just do it in that case and if there's a problem just tell QM to give it to them
