Eurovision - A Brief Introduction
For those unfamiliar, the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) is, just as the name suggests, a song competition. Each year, participating countries from the European Broadcasting Union (plus Australia) send one original song to compete in the event. The winner is determined through a combination of rankings from professional juries and the public televote.
Eurovision has been running annually since 1956, with the only exception being 2020, when the contest was canceled due to the pandemic. This year marked the 69th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, being just as memorable as the editions before it.
37 countries participated this year, sending a great mix of genre, lots of local languages and some incredible performances. Below, I’ll be sharing my personal rankings from this year’s contest. Just over 2 months have passed since the Grand Final of this year, I might be a little late, but can never be too late.
A quick note before I start; I am no expert in music, far from it. this ranking is very subjective and affected by my personal taste and not how good a song objectively is (if a song can be good objectively that is). I try to account some of the "professional" factors but to me the songs are more than just how good they sound or how impressive the instruments are. At the end of the day, everyone enjoys media differently, and there is no correct way to.
37. 🇸🇮 Slovenia | Klemen - How Much Time Do We Have Left
The honor of coming last in my ranking this year goes to Slovenia, third time this has happened this decade (2020 and 2021 being the other two). The song, from the start, maintains a bland ballad feel and never really progresses. The song writing also only makes the song worse for me, felt too 'on the nose'. The performance was decent, him singing while upside down was impressive. Having the footage of his time with the family was a unique choice but to me it didn't work, made it feel like a "Got Talent sob story" performance bait. Klemen is a talented individual, I don't think this song was able to display that talent well.
36. 🇮🇱 Israel | Yuval Raphael - New Day Will Rise
Israel sends yet another pity ballad, worse than Hurricane in almost every way. To me, it has almost all the same problem as Slovenian entry, but better vocals. Repeating the same verse but in French rather than English made the song more interesting for listening, but shows a lack of creativity in writing. The best part of the song for me is the small verse in Hebrew. The performance itself was nothing spectacular, and I think could have been a lot better. I really liked the aesthetics of the music video, if they had kept something similar, it would have worked better in my opinion.
35. 🇭🇷 Croatia | Marko Bošnjak - Poison Cake
This song is a melting pot of various genres, and not a particularly good melting point. At one point it is all cute and whimsical, the next almost metal like instrumentals. The song is very interesting but to me, not necessarily enjoyable to listen to. The performance was incredible and suits the song perfectly, you can see that Marko Bošnjak pours his heart and soul in delivering his best on the night of the semi final. The uniqueness of the song gives it bonus points in my book.
34. 🇬🇪 Georgia | Mariam Shengelia - Freedom
This is a sort of nothing-burger song to me, it has got almost nothing interesting going on. The lyrics are cheesy, the costume reveal was weird and the costume (not the one shown in the image) didn't really work. The vocals were about average, the fault I believe lies in the song where it doesn't allow the performer to really shine. The best part of the performance for me were probably the large white flag guys, but the bar for that was very low. In a strong year, a mediocre song would fall short.
33. 🇮🇪 Ireland | EMMY - Laika Party
One can argue this is the saddest song this year, telling the tragic story of Laika, the dog sent to space by the Soviets in 1957. The song however puts a 'positive spin' on the story and imagines what would happen had Laika survived, presenting it in a catchy pop song. Don't get me wrong, the song is very catchy and you will find me singing along it to is quite often. The way the story is told feels very tone-deaf to me and in a way ruins the song alongside. The performance, for a song filled with dance energy, was very static and was not a fan of the furry astronauts on the screen either. Decent song with a not-so-decent story and ruinous performance.
32. 🇦🇲 Armenia | PARG - SURVIVOR
Survivor feels like a song I would like but somehow I don't. Well, I don't mind it but the song does nothing for me. Like Slovenia, it also suffers from having the lyrics in English and as such me noticing the lack in writing. I may be giving more focus on the lyrics than needed but it can be hard for me to overlook them sometimes. The performance and use of the treadmill was excellent but the song itself a mid tier for me. I can see putting this song in a workout playlist, can see why a lot of people would like it. It advancing to the grand final was definitely a surprise to me.
31. 🇪🇪 Estonia | Tommy Cash - Espresso Macchiato
The People's Winner* of this year. I remember when I first heard it, after Tommy Cash won the Eesti Laul (the national final for Estonia) and immediately hated the song. Safe to say it has grown on me a little since then but I still find the song appalling, especially those live vocals. His vocals made me cringe as soon as he started singing in the first semi final. The studio version is definitely better in that regard. The act, the bodyguard and the stage invader helped bring it as high it is. I quite liked the way stage invader scene was done, made me think for a moment someone actually tried that haha. Someone talked about the satire in this song, and since then I have also started to see it from a rather different perspective than just a fun, silly song. Maybe "No stresso, no stresso, no need to be depresso" have a much deeper meaning than it may seem
30. 🇲🇪 Montenegro | Nina Žižić - Dobrodošli
This was not the first choice of Montenegro, initially the people of Montenegro selected "Clickbait" by NeonoeN to be their representatives. Due to some drama however, the band decided to pull out of Eurovision. Nina Žižić who came second in the same competition, was instead decided as the Montenegrin delegate. As such, I can't help but compare the two songs. I realise that this is a better song from a vocal and lyrical perspective, but I found Clickbait more fun. I think it might even have qualified to the grand final. Anyways, the ranking is about Dobrodošli, an amazing vocal performance to a Balkan ballad we have heard a million times. Though she wasn't her best in the semi final, she is an impressive artist. The song as a whole falls flat for me and her outfit for the song felt at moments outlandish.
29. 🇵🇱 Poland | Justyna Steczkowska - GAJA
I watched the Polish National Final, one of the 3 I followed this year. I had a couple of songs I was rooting for, Gaja was not one of them. To be honest, I was annoyed that it won, to me other songs were clearly a better choice. But the improvement between national final and Basel was nothing to ignore. The performance delivered by Justyna was felt across the television screen, her and the background dancers' energy on the stage and in some ways helped me understand the song. "No one can dance in heels like polish women and men." I did find her 'flying' part a little silly, but the whole performance was very camp so I'll let it slide.
28. 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan | Mamagama - Run With U
I don't know what much I can say about this song, there isn't really a lot to say. It is a fun song to bop to and that's what I do. The boppability of this song makes it rank this high. Plus I like the music in this, the blend of various instruments come together quite well with a touch of folk elements. The performance was very meh and forgettable, but I am not sure what could have been done to improve it.
27. 🇩🇰 Denmark | Sissal - Hallucination
There is nothing more Eurovision-like than a generic radio pop song. To me, this is the radio pop song of the year. There is nothing wrong with being such a song, but need to realise that there are loads of similar successful songs that it will be compared to. For what it is worth, Sissal delivered an incredible performance and the song was strong enough as well, which explains how she qualified against the odds. Her self criticism was also one of the highlights for me this season.
26. 🇦🇺 Australia | Go-Jo - Milkshake Man
I remember listening to this song the first time on the day it was released, I remember how with every passing verse my eyebrow raised a slightly before I went “Now hold up, you ain’t talking about milk”. I don’t think the double meaning of the song is so hard to spot, but for the context of my ranking I didn’t particularly account for it, to me it is just a fun quirk of the song which doesn’t really elevates my experience. You can bet though I have made a lot of jokes referencing this innuendo. As for the performance, the live performance had great costumes and fits the vibes of the song, but the vocals were subpar. I was a big fan of it initially but with time my appreciation for the song has fallen, I don’t know what is the reason but I think the appeal for the song isn’t that long lasting, given you weren’t creeped out on the first listen.
25. 🇲🇹 Malta | Miriana Conte - SERVING
Ah yes, back to back double meaning song. You might listen to it and wonder what is double meaning about this, there isn’t one in the version approved by EBU but initially the song was called “Kant” and the lyrics went “Serving Kant”, kant means singing in Maltese, of course. Miriana had to censor the word “Kant”, which I don’t believe takes much away from the song. Yes, it was a big gimmick but even without it the song works perfectly. There is nothing I can complain about in her singing. Her performance though, the MESC performance had a story, how she overcame hate, built something for herself, did what she liked, the Eurovision performance failed to convey that and became a sexualized act instead. That deducts some points for me.
24. 🇷🇸 Serbia | Princ - Mila
For me, there is something strong about this song, something which transcends language. The song has slowly grown on me, every listen makes me appreciate it more than before. If you were to ask me to point to a specific thing about the song I like, I might not be able to; it is more the blend of the elements which gives an appreciable final product that I like. It isn’t anything special, anything magnificent which makes me want to rank it higher, and Serbia has definitely done better in the past. It was a little generic, some might say bland, and the performance was nothing crazy.
23. 🇳🇴 Norway | Kyle Alessandro - Lighter
A very middle of the road song for me, it is fun to listen to, has good energy. And the meaning behind the song might be its strongest part. The song inspired by Kyle’s mother who was battling cancer, making the lyrics very meaningful (this is how you write a song on such themes, looking at you Slovenia). I am not the biggest fan of the dance break, have heard some people quite like but it just isn’t for me, it ruins the flow of the song. But overall, a solid performance.
22. 🇨🇾 Cyprus | Theo Evan - Shh
One of the more interesting performances, though for what was promised, I think it under-delivered. Still, an impressive performance nonetheless with a very unimpressive vocals. The studio version is great, but in the live performances, his vocals are far from what one would expect. There was a whole "mysterious man" thing attached to this song by the delegation and in my opinion that gamble paid off quite badly. I don't believe the actual reveal is what was intended when writing the songs, but that would be venturing into conspiracy waters. Anyways, can't wait to see it on the iceberg.
21. 🇫🇷 France | Louane - maman
This song was in the contention to win the whole thing, how? I still don’t get why people thought that, I just can’t see this song winning over other so many better songs in my opinion. The song is touching, sure. The lyrics mean a lot to her, definitely. But at the end of the day, the song to me is bland in some ways, I never truly connected with the song in the way it is intended. Her vocals were great, but not the best of the night and the performance and the sand symbolism wasn’t as spectacular as one would have hoped. Though everything I have said is negative, the song is quite nice. It is just I am comparing it with the expectations I had based on people’s reaction and it did not deliver.
20. 🇸🇲 San Marino | Gabry Ponte - Tutta L'Italia
One country sending a tribute to another country in a DJ act? That’s refreshing, just like this song. It provides a danceable beat and makes-you-happy rhythm, which I quite dig. When it was first selected I couldn’t believe this is an actual entry for Eurovision, but then if some country would try something like that, it has to be San Marino. I didn’t know how it would translate on stage, and to be honest, it didn’t very well. For such an upbeat song, the performance felt very empty, the 6 people rule doesn’t help, and having them spread out over the whole stage only makes it worse. The visuals on the screen were horrendous as well, to me. Regardless, a fun song and that counts to something.
19. 🇮🇸 Iceland | VÆB - RÓA
Do you know what was missing from Eurovision? That’s right, Minecraft aquatic animals graphics! And boy did væb deliver. Róa is a party song to me, mindless fun and just vibing (no pun intended). This siblings duo was probably the most active on social media and with other fan media during the pre-contest period and as such gained a decent following going into the competition week. The performance was, just like the song, fun, enjoyable; they were able to deliver this moment of just pure amusement. The violins and the mic-drop was as perfect an end to the performance as there can be.
18. 🇪🇸 Spain | Melody - ESA DIVA
This song, I feel, is hated way too much by the fandom. I did not follow the Spanish national final, and heard this song only after it was selected for ESC, and remember instantly liking it. Something in the song, maybe what it is trying to portray, maybe her voice which has this feral and angelic feel simultaneously, made me like it throughout the season. Then the revamped version was released and the song lost that feeling for me, became another heavy beats song with little substance. Still, her performance was marvellous and her opening shot outfit probably the best this year.
17. 🇬🇧 United Kingdom | Remember Monday - What The Hell Just Happened?
Harmonies, oh the harmonies! I love how their voices blend and mix together, how the band gives each member their moment, their spot. The way the song progresses, takes turns, shifts tones and tempo and melodies, it can be overwhelming at the start but it does make for a unique experience. One of the more interesting songs this year, however the live performance wasn’t the best. Staging could have been better in my opinion, incorporating more elements from the music video rather than that chandelier. Their voice however, flawless. They showed they can sing just as good live as they can in studio, which is harder with a complex song like this I’d say.
16. 🇨🇿 Czechia | ADONXS - Kiss Kiss Goodbye
Adonxs’ voice, I find it so sweet, so wonderful to listen to, his voice is very touching. The song is a great package too, it feels unique enough while maintaining a broad appeal. I had high hopes for this song, I was certain it would perform well, but when it didn’t even qualify I felt rather sad. If you’d see the actual performance of Semi Final, you can see why he didn’t, the missing of a vocals cue was a killing blow to it. The dance break in this song was very controversial but I quite dig it, and generally I am not a fan of dance breaks. The performance too was great in my opinion, except for that one killing blow.
15. 🇬🇷 Greece | Klavdia - Asteromáta
Greece was also a national final I followed and Asteromata was my favourite in that. I was glad it won. Klavdia’s vocals are phenomenal, live or in studio. I might even say the best female vocals this year. For the national final performance, I found it intimate but also rather static. She improved the performance, and truly what an improvement! The Eurovision performance also kept a simple-ness, but there were so many more emotions in that, everything worked perfectly. I was left in awe after that performance, it alone made the song rise a lot for me. It reminded me of 1944 in the moment (Ukraine 2016, winning song).
14. 🇧🇪 Belgium | Red Sebastian - Strobe Lights
“How much red do you want?” “Yes.” For techno-pop, this is such a good song to me. I loved it the first time I heard, had a little phase where I didn’t like it, love it now again. There were quite a many a shocking parts about the results this year, Strobe Lights not only not qualifying, but placing second last in the semi is beyond my understanding. He had passable vocals, a great performance which worked well with the song, an enjoyable song; why second last with the people? If I had a nickel for every time both Belgium and Czechia didn’t qualify with great songs, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but sad that it happened twice.
13. 🇱🇺 Luxembourg | Laura Thorn - La Poupée Monte Le Son
This was not my favourite song in Luxembourg Song Contest, but it was far from the worst, not annoyed at all that it won. The song, a spiritual successor to Poupée de cire, poupée de son by France Gall, a winning song for Luxembourg from 1965, tells a story about ‘cutting the strings of the puppet they are’, a story which the performance conveys greatly, her doll-like dress and almost mechanical movements at the start to a freer choreography and a sparkling, diva dress by the end. Her voice is sweet, the choreography is on point, and the performance was such a glow up. The opening scene of the dollhouse with France Gall in background might be the best opening this year. I would not have believed you if you told me at the start of the season this song will end up as high at did on my rankings.
12. 🇳🇱 Netherlands | Claude - C'est La Vie
A multi-language pop song with a charming singer, an incredible voice and a catchy hook? Yes, please! The song is so adorable and danceable, Claude’s voice and the mixing of English and French works so well. The lyrics, a meaningful tribute to his mother, incorporates some basic French into the song in a way that feels only natural. The performance was great, conveys the emotions of the song, in particular when he sees his reflection, his younger self in the screen at the end. I quite like one long continuous shot so that also worked in its favour. The one negative about performance was Claude forgot the lyrics to the song at the start of the Grand Final performance, but he recovered so well that a lot didn’t even realise he messed up.
11. 🇩🇪 Germany | Abor & Tynna - Baller
As we enter into my top 10, I'd want to say all the artists, be it Klemen or Claude, irrespective of where they landed in my rankings or in the actual results, they are all incredible artists. All much more talented than I'll ever be and I have no right to criticize them, this is just something I have done for fun. I may have been a bit too negative towards some of the songs but in reality they are all amazing, it is just by ranking them some have to end up in lower ranks. Milkshake Man, Shh, Survivor, they are all atleast 70/100 for me. A lower ranking doesn't necessarily mean bad, only relatively worse.
10. 🇱🇻 Latvia | Tautumeitas - Bur Man Laimi
So, every positive thing I had to say about Remember Monday (UK), take that and double it plus more positives, that is Bur Man Liami. The way their voices melt together to produce this 'chant of happiness', it is mesmerizing; they sound angelic. This folk song provides such a fresh breath, an interesting take on this genre, and a cultural performance of which will be remembered for a long time. The performance, oh my it is enchanting, so unique and so wonderful. Beautifully choreographed and well enacted. It has to be one of the highlight of the night for many, I know it was for me. It baffles me that people believed it was more likely to not qualify and love how Tautumeitas proved everyone wrong by finishing second in their semi!
9. 🇦🇹 Austria | JJ - Wasted Love
JJ is, spoiler alert, this year's winner. With the vocals as impressive as his and the staging as magnificent as Sergio Jaén's, it doesn't surprise me. And they truly are all as amazing and so worthy of win. I wasn't rooting for an Austrian win, but I believed this was going to be the outcome before the finale. I have forgotten count of how many times I have gotten goosebumps due to his vocals. And that techno part at the end, it is such a twist and works so perfectly, so flawlessly. I'll be honest, I was a little underwhelmed by how the techno part was staged but it was still so mind blowing. I find myself coming back to this performance because of the visuals and every time they feel just as awe-inspiring as last time, if not more. Only little complaint. they are a little harsh on eyes.
8. 🇸🇪 Sweden | KAJ - Bara Bada Bastu
Sweden, the home of generic, formulative, english pop songs, the country which hasn't sent a Swedish song since 1998. But this time, the things changed and they sent a somewhat unique, fun entry in Swedish. And it took the fandom by a storm. Reasonably so, it is an awesome song, something which I'd say represents what Eurovision is about, a fun "little" song competition without being competitive, it embodies the Eurovision spirit. For a song that is written off as 'joke entry' more than it needs to, the trio has some great vocal abilities, which aren't fully highlighted in this song. And the performance, it truly takes you to a Nordic forest and makes you relax in a sauna. Amazing props, especially the extra large sausage.
7. 🇺🇦 Ukraine | Ziferblat - Bird of Pray
Ukraine always sends something unique, and this year was no different. A rock song with complex progressions and shifts, this is what makes this song so great to me, it is experimental and not afraid to be. I loved it when I first heard it and honestly from just the song perspective it might be among my top candidates. The song hits almost everything I like in a song. I think the studio version sounds much better than live, but apparently Danyil (the lead singer) had laryngitis during the Eurovision week so I'll let it slide. The performance, though it has grown on me since it was first shown, I still think the original Vidbir staging was better and suited the song more. But, as I said, I have grown to like Eurovision performance too and it has a charm of its own.
6. 🇦🇱 Albania | Shkodra Elektronike - Zjerm
This was one of the first songs to be selected for this year, and from the moment it was selected the fandom has been rallying behind it. But I did not understood the song at first, it was unique, interesting, sure, but not as good as the people were making it seem. Then, I read the lyrics, read their translation and the song clicked with me. It made so much more sense, the emotions were unearthed for me. Beatriçe's beautiful verses provide a sense of hope, an ideal world, while Kolë's spoken, almost brutal verses bring us back to harsh reality. Mixing the folk elements to produce this piece of art, it carries with it one of the most meaningful lyrics. Once you 'understand' the song, it hits even harder, produce this deliberately unfinished sense in yourself, a longing for a time you never knew. And they were able to articulate this to the stage in Basel too with the contrasting themes in both of their characters. It deserved a better result.
5. 🇵🇹 Portugal | NAPA - Deslocado
This is probably my 'most controversial opinion'. Before the Eurovision week, it was the #1 in my rankings, that is based on song alone. The performance of every song after this was so incredible that it fell a few places. The performance was nothing special, not gonna focus on that. It was dead last in the betting odds to even qualify. On that split-screen, when they announced Portugal, I was the happiest person on this planet for a brief moment. The song, it feels like a warm hug amongst a sea of uncertainty. It makes me long for a place I have never been to, but want to end up at. As a person with a very busy, fast paced city life, this song relaxes me in a way no other song has been able to. The song makes me think about my life, my future, if there will be peace in my life and the cost of that peace. Saudade describes perfectly what I feel with this song.
4. 🇨🇭 Switzerland | Zoë Më - Voyage
Before the Eurovision week, we had never seen Voyage being performed on a stage like that. I did not know what to expect from the staging, no one did. Out of nowhere comes this so intimate, so beautiful staging with everything done to perfection (except the batteries in camera, apparently), and it took my breath away. The song is so beautiful as it is, the voice of Zoë Më making it much more beautiful. The staging adds so much to the song, makes the song so much more magnificent. The camera movement, lighting choices, angles, everything comes together to produce this beautiful act. It was, if not the best, among the best performances of the week. I already mentioned how much I enjoy one-shot takes, the same applies here. She delivered the song such an much elegance, such a grace, hats off to her.
3. 🇱🇹 Lithuania | Katarsis - Tavo Akys
The song has such a dark feel to it, such ominousness,I love it. I am an enjoyer of rock, and such a spin makes it so much more interesting. They were able to bring that ominous feel to the stage too, the performance was as good as it could have been. From the zoom in, the environment changing in the background, the "Tavo, Tavo, Tavo", everything was on point. I was a little worried about the vocals, but Lukas made much an improvement between the national final and Eurovision. A little fun fact, this song helps me go to sleep. I am not sure why, and it i not because it is boring or anything. But when the "Tavo, Tavo" part hits something in my brain clicks and it starts to feel sleepy if I am tired.
2. 🇫🇮 Finland | Erika Vikman - ICH KOMME
She owned that stage. Her confidence was at a level most can't even dream to achieve. Honestly, I can't think of any performance from recent years which can rival what she had on the stage. From the start of the performance to the climax (hehe), she delivers her best, all on her alone; she doesn't need anyone else. The song as well is fantastic, full of the same energy and the incredible, impeccable performance by Erika elevates it to such a higher level. I was a fan of the performance from the national final, the concert-like feel made it better in some ways, but overall she was better in Basel. When she ascends to midair on top of a giant mic, that specific moment was the best moment this year in any performance for me. The build up to it, the reveal, the pyro, it was perfect.
1. 🇮🇹 Italy | Lucio Corsi - Volevo Essere Un Duro
People talk about feeling connected to songs, I've had my fair share of songs I have connected to; Volevo Essere Un Duro joins that table. The lyrics, English translation of which were included as subtitles in the grand final performance, are about this person who was told he should be a tough guy, to do this and that. And because of what the society, the people around him expects, he tried to fit that mold, tried and failed. The realization hits him that he can't fit into any mold without breaking him, all that matters is he stay true to himself, a soft, humble soul and an easy to get hurt guy. That not being tough isn't bad, not being yourself is. The lyrics resonated with me, having had some similar experiences, made me connect to the song on a level I did not know was possible. Lucio is one of my favorite artists this season, his commitment to music, incredible talent and devotion to the art reflects. The staging, albeit minimalist, works well with the song. The moment near the end, when Lucio plays a harmonica into his hand-held mic, is such a raw, touching moment; it made me shed a tear when I first saw it. That moment might have single-handedly landed this song on the top place for my ranking.
That concludes the ranking with corresponding text longer than it needs to be. It was the first season I followed, and it was such a fun experience, can't wait to do it again next year and hopefully for many a years to come.
There was a great variety this year, would love to hear more opinions!
Great blog! I'd comment but you already known my opinions.
Amazing blog!
I also find it a little ironic that despite knowing only this version of Eurovision, my #1 entry this year is a song with a very simple staging, which feels like it could be from an earlier, more simple version save for the props.
My top 6-10 usually includes Ireland, Sweden, Austria, Poland, and UK
