Eurovision 2026: My Rankings

Eurovision - A Brief Introduction

This is the second time I am doing a Eurovision ranking blog, still I'll give a quick introduction of the Eurovision Song Contest. To quote my mother, it is "the silly show where people dance on stage in funny costumes." While not completely false, there is more to the song contest. As the name suggests, ultimately it is the song which matters and is judged - both by the public and a professional jury.
This was the 70th edition of the Eurovision, running annually since 1956. This year, 35 countries participated in the competition, 2 less than the last year and in general a low number of participants when we look at the past two decades. Last Saturday, the grand final of Eurovision took place in Vienna and the latest winner was crowned. What better way to celebrate than for me to share my personal rankings!
Disclaimer: I am no expert in music and not the best judge either. This is mostly based on personal taste and preference. Any complaints should be redirected to Auri.
In writing this blog, I also asked a few of my friends and fellow JetPunkers to share their thoughts on one of their favorite entries this year. So ahead in the blog, you will also get to read why ant512, Asturic, Geographystar and MasterRocket loved the song they did. Huge thanks to them for their contribution to this blog!

35. 🇧🇪 Belgium | Dancing on the Ice - Essyla

This is the first time Belgium has ended up in the bottom quarter for me, and it went directly for the last place. I don't mind this song much but it never evoked any feelings for me. The studio version is somewhat enjoyable but the live I was not a fan of at all - to me it was the worst performance in the semi final so when it qualified, I was quite shocked. I would give her one thing though, she improved her vocals a lot between when she first performed it live and the Eurovision week. I don't want to be overly harsh to it and can see why some might like it but for a song called Dancing on the Ice, there wasn't much dancing.

34. 🇩🇪 Germany | Fire - Sarah Engels

"I'm on fire, fire. You're a liar, liar." Lyricism 101.

Germany was my last place before the live performances. Her stage presence gave it just enough room to bring it to second last. Progress! Still though, no matter how good she is, you can't ignore how the song is the most bland thing imaginable and goes nowhere. Germany has the potential to be powerhouse but they keep sending the most generic songs possible. The genre isn't something for me either so this was never getting any higher. Given that it got zero from the public, I think the sentiment is similar across the continent.

But let's be real, Eurovision is incomplete without a conventionally attractive woman singing a bland pop song.

33. 🇫🇷 France | Regarde ! - Monroe

Once again, France tries too hard for scoring a win. With the success of Nemo and JJ, both with opera in their winning songs, France sends Monroe with an even more operatic and more French song. Part of the reason for my dislike of this song is how manufactured and soul-less it is, it doesn't feel authentic. The lyrics as well are bland and unimaginative. I am trying to think of good things to say about this song and I can't find anything.

The only good element here is Monroe with her incredible talent and powerful voice, she gave this song her best and it shows. At 17 years old, she was the youngest contestant this year and still delivered a show-stopping performance. Her vocal strength is other-worldly and she earned every single point she got. Just with a better song and a more connecting staging, she would be able to shine more and France would end up higher in my ranking.

32. 🇮🇱 Israel | Michelle - Noam Bettan

For a change of pace, Israel doesn't send a sad pity ballad! Rejoice! The song is... fine. It isn't the worst thing in the world, I like it more than some other songs and Noam can sing it well, but it has an empty feeling for me. The song feels detached from the singer which is a shame because Noam has a beautiful voice and he could deliver it live. Speaking of live performance, that diamond is so tacky, I hate it. I thought maybe live performance will help me understand the song more and I will finally be able to connect with it but it only went down in my ranking after the live performance.

31. 🇸🇲 San Marino | Superstar - Senhit ft. Boy George

Senhit, our queen, returns! With a song that is worse than all her previous attempts but uhh okay I still kinda dig it. What else has she got? Oh... Boy George? Why?

Boy George actively brought this performance down, without him the song and the live is better. You can see Senhit giving the song its all while Boy George is there with such low energy that the whole song gets dragged down as soon as he appears. Remove Boy George and the song is much better - he doesn't even add much to the song except 2 lines.

Still, it wouldn't take away from the fact that the song is weaker than what Senhit has delivered in the past but it is a bop and I would enjoy it a lot more. The live performance was nothing special, I prefer the studio version.

30. 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan | Just Go - Jiva

The song that was considered "dead on arrival." Jiva the Diva represented Azerbaijan with a song that leaves a lot to be desired. I weirdly kinda like it, it isn't something I'd listen to much but her voice is beautiful and she gave her 100% in the semi-final. There is a rock version of this song which I prefer much much more but that is not what I am ranking. On its own, the song does nothing and has very bland lyrics, but when she sang the same in Azeri, it felt more powerful. The result is exactly what everyone expected but once again, like France, this is a case of good artist with bad song. I loved her presence much more in the rock version and the We Could be the Same cover.

29. 🇵🇱 Poland | Pray - Alicja

Fun fact, Alicja was first chosen to represent Poland in 2020 but couldn't due to the event getting cancelled. This year, she once again competed in the national final of Poland and won, proceeded to have an amazing result for Poland. I had written off this song as soon as it was chosen, it isn't to my liking and still is not. The national final performance was quite bad as well but she had such a glowup on the Eurovision stage, I was left impressed. In both the semi and the final, she was flawless and the improved staging works really well with the song. I may not like the song but I can recognize how incredible she was.

As for why I don't like it? Well, the mashup of various styles doesn't work for me at all, the song feels messy and all over the place. I can't deny though, the fusion is an interesting choice. The rap and the gospel music, I wouldn't have guessed the two can go together

28. 🇨🇾 Cyprus | Jalla - Antigoni

Oh Antigoni. This song fell the most because of the live performance. Her singing in the semi was, to say the least, giving me second hand embarrassment. She was better in the final but still far from good. The staging idea was not the best either, in my opinion. The table restricted her movement more than it added to the song. "I'm dancing on the table, baby," I don't think they needed to go completely literal on that. Speaking strictly of the live performance, it would be in my bottom 5, but truth be told, I like the song. The studio version is nice to listen to, has a charm and feels authentic. These elements were not present on the stage. I was shocked that it qualified but well the results are the results. And Greece wasn't in their semi so can't blame them.

27. 🇲🇹 Malta | Bella - Aidan

I have had a loving and a falling with Bella. The best way I can put it is, for the most part I find the song bland but the last minute of it is amazing. When the tone of the song changes and it is complemented by the whole spinning sequence in the live performance, that is done incredibly. I love that part in the studio version too. But other than that, I find this ballad to be rather lackluster. His beautiful voice works incredibly for the song but the english lyrics atleast come off as corny to me. Ultimately though, the song deserved its position in the final and the staging was a good upgrade, the effects it produced were incredible. I like the concept of this staging more than the staging itself.

26. 🇱🇺 Luxembourg | Mother Nature - Eva Marija

Mother Nature has always had a rather child-like feel to me, and I mean that in a good way. The way Eva delivers the song, she shows a wondering mind about  the nature, had this child-like amusement. That gave the song a personality that it wouldn't have otherwise. It doesn't have the best lyrics either but I like to listen to the song. It is calming and enjoyable in a unique way. Mother Nature wasn't my pick of the best song in the Luxembourg National Final but I am glad she got her chance to represent Luxembourg.

Those on screen effects during the live performance thought... welcome Poland 2022! (Not a fan of it.) The LSC performance might have been better. They tried to do a lot on the Eurovision stage and it didn't come across well to me.

25. 🇦🇲 Armenia | Paloma Rumba - Simón

"PALOMA RUMBA, LETS GO!"

The most energetic song of this season, no doubts. I was skeptical of the song when it was released, partially of whether Simón will be able to sing it live but the man is living breathing charisma with good enough vocals and dance moves that will want to make you go Paloma Rumba as well. There were a few sound mixing issues it felt like but I don't think Simón is to blame for that.

It was delivered brilliantly on stage and he carried that song but the performance won't be half as effective without those backing dancers. It is the worse of the "office burnout" song this year (is this gonna become a new genre in Eurovision?) but still it was able to differentiate itself with its unique structure. Kind of a mess to listen to but an enjoyable mess and a fun staging.

24. 🇱🇻 Latvia | Ēnā - Atvara

Ēnā is a very moving, very emotional song. I couldn't fully connect with it but I am sure a lot of people shed a tear to this song. The lyrics are sublime and evocative; Atvara delivers them gorgeously on the stage. The staging for this song is very minimalistic but it does wonders to the song. The reflexion of the shadow of a little girl was a touching symbolism. It didn't rank particularly high in my rankings coming into the Eurovision week but with every listen, every performance, it grew on me. The song means a lot  to Atvara and the pain, the bitter-sweetness is there in her voice, you can feel it.

I am not the biggest fan of the whole glass shards TVP effect, it takes something  from the song away for me (more in general, it makes me disconnect with the live performance) but I can see why she chose to keep it. It was still more in taste than Luxembourg.

23. 🇦🇺 Australia | Eclipse - Delta Goodrem

What a bland song with what an amazing performer. She has such a magnetic presence and such a powerful vocal ability, I was stunned by how well she sung it live. I heard her praises loud and clear ever since she was announced to be the Aussie representative and I must say, all her praises hold true. She was phenomenal.

Why did it end up so low then? Like I mentioned in the first line, she is incredible but the song isn't. Very generic lyrics and it evokes nothing in me. In maybe 2011 it would have swept the contest but I never could see such a song winning nowadays in Eurovision. (Tattoo kinda did but Loreen is Loreen.) Still, I was expecting her to win the jury. But a second place finish in the jury is still respectable.

22. 🇲🇪 Montenegro | Nova zora - Tamara Živković

Montenegro has had a rough time in Eurovision. They haven't competed in a grand final for over a decade now; I was certain this year it will change and then the rehearsal clips dropped and suddenly felt less likely. I tried to have hope but the live performance was, to say the least, messy. I personally still enjoyed it but I can see why a lot didn't. If it was the same system as last year, she would have qualified which would have been incredible.

The song itself is something unique, something special (the balkans are really going all in on the dark vibes this year, aren't they). The revamp made it so much more enhanced and the mix of Montenegrin and English works really well. The lyrics are quite meaningful and the song carries with it a powerful message. Tamara did incredible work; if only her vision appeared more clearly on stage, it could have been their best result in so long.

21. 🇸🇪 Sweden | My System - Felicia

Felicia has a very inspiring back story which I'd recommend others to give a read to. EDM as a genre isn't the most successful in Eurovision but I love how she brings something unique to Vienna. The performance and the whole laser show is riveting. This song was once playing on my bluetooth speakers as they were on my bed, the electronic sounds were making the whole bed vibrate so much, kind of an exhilarating moment. The lyrics are a bit non-sensical (which I have came around to embrace, like they are so bad that it becomes iconic in a way) and it can feel that she lacks the energy on stage compared to wat the song demands - those are my only complaints. It isn't something revolutionary or incredible; it is fun, it is good, I enjoy it and a mid-table ranking is enough to show that.

20. 🇬🇪 Georgia | On Replay - Bzikebi

Speaking of fun songs, On Replay is so much fun. I am in the minority of the people who enjoyed the live performance. Yeah, it could have been better, yeah the backing vocalists didn't sound as good, but the guy was having the time of his life on the stage. I like the silly dance they do, the robots on the screen were a bit too much but added to the song, and this song got stuck in my head after the semi. A little more energy in the live performance would have gone a long way

The song has two themes, of letting go and enjoying yourself to the fullest, and anti-AI messaging. I didn't get the second theme till I read the lyrics but it was because I was enjoying myself and "letting it go," didn't focus on the lyrics, so the song also works on a meta level.

19. 🇳🇴 Norway | Ya Ya Ya - Jonas Lovv

I'll admit, I wasn't the biggest fan of Ya Ya Ya when it was selected in MGP but the song slowly won me over. It is catchy, has some good rock rhythm to it and it has crept its way into my brain. It suffers from the problem of the performance not looking as good on the stage in Vienna as it did in Oslo; part of the reason is apparently Lovv was rather sick and he had to push himself to perform, which is clear when you hear the vocals. Plus the island stage in the national final works wonderfully, like it was made for this song. Jonas Lovv exudes Freddie Mercury on stage and I love that.

Ya Ya Ya is what Like An Animal (San Marino 2023) would be if it was good.

18. 🇨🇿 Czechia | Crossroads - Daniel Zizka

To quote ant512, "I love sad boys singing beautifully about how the world sucks."
It is a beautiful ballad about the distinct position the singer has found himself in, the big questions of life he has to answer and the dilemma he has to go through. When I first heard the song, I didn't enjoy it at all; felt it was 'boring'. Listening to the song more and trying to understand its meaning has only grown my appreciation for the song. Daniel has a beautiful voice and pours his heart in singing it. The stage effect with the mirrors was done masterfully and it helped to keep the focus on Daniel and his angelic vocal performance. Gutted about the technical issue he faced during the grand final.
As an artist, Zizka has great potential and I hope it turns out for the better for him. The vocals reminded me of Gjon's Tears, I don't think any other male vocalist has been able to channel that since Gjon's Tears performed in Rotterdam.

17. 🇩🇰 Denmark | Før vi går hjem - Søren Torpegaard Lund

Denmark was considered one of the favorites to win the contest and in some ways I can see where that stems from, but the song is somewhat generic pop song which is elevated by the fact that it is in Danish. I still like the sound of it more than a lot of pop that this competition has to offer. The selling point of the song is its live performance, where Søren's brilliant choreography coupled with an amazing group of backing dancers and a simple yet unique prop makes the song shine to a great degree. The performance is what matters and I felt like on the night of the grand final, I was underwhelmed. I don't know if it is fatigue of sorts but I much preferred the national final performance, it felt more intimate, more raw and Søren felt more comfortable in the space. Still, Søren delivered the best Danish result since their victory in 2013 and that is a feat worth celebrating.

16. 🇦🇹 Austria | Tanzschein - Cosmó

As far as host entries go, this is such a jetful one. It is unserious, it is about dancing, has a sprinkle of social messaging. With a spot guaranteed in the final and no pressure to win, why won't you send such entries. The song kinda slaps and the whole animals allegory, though took me a little while to get, makes much more sense once you get it. The performance was maybe a little underwhelming but I wasn't really expecting anything spectacular either. The change in his voice during the chorus was off-putting for me in the start but it has grown on me, I quite enjoy it now.

Plus, I wanna add, from all I have seen of Cosmó, he seems a fun guy to be around and brings a great energy with him.

15. 🇬🇷 Greece | Ferto - Akylas

At one point, Ferto used to be in my top 3, but the song gets old really fast. It is still a great song, don't get me wrong; Akylas has the perfect charisma to perform such a song, but eventually you hit a fatigue with it. I have a lot to talk about it - the song itself is catchy, albeit repetitive. The whole maximalism and consumerism message ties into the song perfectly and along with the greed and money corrupting a person. The bridge in the song (a ballad break if you will), where he directly addresses his mother, adds a ton of character to the song and gives us a deep insight into the rationalization of the over-consumption, but rather than sticking to it, the song is quick to revert back to that lavish lifestyle and a neverending need - "Whatever, you get it." This is not a complaint, it makes the song better, or well more interesting for me.

The live performance was... a bit of a mess. The first half was quite bad and not executed well, the second half was great. I love the changing rooms gimmick they did. But still, the performance was a bit too much - which can be argued is tied to the meaning of the song, and I like that explanation but it doesn't make the performance any good. Oh and the blatant use of AI, boooo!

14. 🇧🇬 Bulgaria | Bangaranga - Dara

"I'm the bangaran - bangaranga, bangaranga, bangaranga."

It has been over a week since the final and can I just say I am still a little perplexed it won. I love that it won, I'm so happy for Dara and for Bulgaria getting its first win, that too a consensus win (first time since 2017!) and a landslide. I don't think anyone saw this coming and we all got bangaranga'd.

I'll be honest, I didn't pay much attention to the song before the Eurovision week, it isn't something I listen to at all. But seeing that live performance and her charisma on stage, I am sold on the win. The performance had such a glowup on the stage in Vienna, amazing choreography and interaction of Dara, both with us as viewers as well as the backing dancers. Those dancers were in perfect rhythm with Dara and she sounded so well and composed on the stage. It has kinda become an earworm for me and I keep returning to the live performance just because of how good it is. Looking at it on a TV, the performance may seem simple enough but there is a lot of technicalities involved with the set which I only found out about after seeing an audience POV.

Dara did something Eleni Foureira or Chanel couldn't. Congratulations to Dara for her win! Absolute Bangaranga!

13. 🇦🇱 Albania | Nân - Alis

Nân is a beautiful song about the pain a mother feels when her child leave home, waiting eagerly for them to come back. The lyrics of this song convey that tragic pain beautifully. When I saw the music video that had the english subtitles, I was overwhelmed by emotions. The song finally made sense to me. Plus the way that music video was staged was spectacular.

Sadly, part of the magic didn't come to light on the stage in Vienna. I am not a fan of the floating head and the random people on screen; the first half of the performance was a little disappointing. In the second half however, when the mother is on the stage with Alis, that was done beautifully. The moment where she embraces Alis, it reminded me the reason this song resonated with me and thousands of others. As she takes off the glasses of Alis, we don't see a singer on stage, we see a son who has missed his mother.

Among the various folks worldwide who were touched by Nân, one of them is Geographystar. This is what he had to say about the song:
A few weeks ago, I was considering whether to listen to the Eurovision songs this year (I'd never listened to any of the previous years), and I wish I'd started listening earlier, if only so I could've listened to Albania's more, it's that good.
The vocals, the instrumentals (full and grand, yet not distracting from the story being told), and the lyrics all come together so well to tell the message of the song, about a mother's pain after her son moved far away. It is a fact of life nearly everywhere, but especially in Albania. A quarter of their population has moved away in the last few decades, and 10-20% of the Albanian economy (sources differ) is money sent back from relatives in different countries (the only countries in Europe with a higher % are 🇽🇰, 🇲🇩, 🇧🇦, and 🇲🇪, all other Balkans countries in similar situations).
In our modern day, with people moving more than they ever have (the average American, for example, will move 12 times in their life) we risk forgetting the first love that we have in our lives, with our parents, and specifically with our moms. It's a simple love, but in the best possible meaning of that word, it loves despite, and sometimes even because of our faults, "such a warm mess, books on the floor". The lyric "for a better life, I know" speaks to the fact that there are often good reasons to leave, providing a better future for their own kids, working at important jobs, etc, but that doesn't make the pain any less real.
But even through the very real pain and sadness, "two weeks, two years", there is still hope, especially in his mother's verse at the end, that things will get better, and families will one day he reunited. This could easily have been a song about how there is no hope, and how everything is irreconcilably broken, but it isn't, and I find that incredibly encouraging.

12. 🇫🇮 Finland | Liekinheitin - Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen

The favorites to win Eurovision by a margin. Liekinheitin is an expertly crafted song which makes both the vocalist and the violinist shine together; the song is incomplete without either of them. It wasn't my favorite but right till the voting sequence started, if you had asked me I'd have told you "Finland is winning." Seeing them finish not even in the top 5 was a big surprise.

The song has the full package, the drama, a staging done to perfection, decent vocals and astounding violin. I don't know why Finland under-performed, but if this song had won, it would have been a worthy winner as well. The camerawork in this performance is probably the best we have seen since Bambie Thug, and both Linda and Pete help bring that vision to fruition.

11. 🇱🇹 Lithuania | Sólo quiero más - Lion Ceccah

I absolutely love the moment when the subtitles appear on screen during the Lithuanian performance. They appear at the perfect time and help convey the meaning of the song with just 3-4 lines translated. I have been a little obsessed with this song and the theatrics of it; it tickles a very specific theater bone inside of me. Lion Ceccah has an extraordinary creative vision which shows not just with this performance, but through various moment, various performances throughout the season.

The song is a multilingual one, he sings in 6 different languages (and Sign Language!) on the stage. The vocals were a little shaky on the night of grand final but I didn't mind it much in the context of the song. I could see he was giving his 100%.

The meaning of the song also resonated with me in some ways - it is a song about what it means to be human in this rapidly changing world and what differentiates us from the ever-evolving technology that surrounds us, the messaging is more relevant than ever. For a contest having two songs with anti-AI themes, it is disappointing how some acts and even the hosts used AI in production.

Before we continue to the top 10, I want to give a quick shoutout to a few songs from the national final season that didn't get the chance to represent their country.
  • 🇫🇮 Lululai - Komiat — A fun cheery song that you can't help but smile to. I love the energy and upliftment they bring.
  • 🇩🇪 black glitter - wavvyboi — A glam rock song with an energy that you'd assume he already is a big superstar. I hope one day he makes it to the Eurovision stage.
  • 🇱🇺 Sweet Tooth - Steve Castile"Hey, I'm a dog, throw me a bone, watch me roll over for you." Need I say more? No but I unironically love this song and listen to it often.
  • 🇵🇱 Parawany Tango - Piotr Pręgowski
  • 🇺🇦 TYT - Monokate — I am a biased with my love for Go_A but songs like this are exactly the reason I love them so much. The mix Monokate (and Go_A) brings is a unique one and something I have found quite a liking to.

10. 🇮🇹 Italy | Per semre si - Sal Da Vinci

It is a wedding and we all are invited! Sal Da Vinci takes the stage and like the most charismatic grandpa ever, officiates a wedding while singing a song that is a love letter to love itself, how can I not enjoy this song. The a bit over-the-top performance makes this song more delightful and the eventual meeting of the bride and the groom was done well. And as a song too, it is such a banger, has such an uplifting tune and you have to resist dancing to it.

The Sanremo performance had an element where Da Vinci left the stage and danced with a random member of the audience, I'm a little sad that didn't happen in Vienna as I found that moment so beautiful. Other than that, I felt like the vocals were a little off, but ultimately his stage presence was enough for us to be entranced by him. If this song does not play in all the Italian weddings from now on, then something is not right!

09. 🇬🇧 United Kingdom | Eins, Zwei, Drei - Look Mum No Computer

There is something very British about complaining how things are in Britain and finding a sense of freedom by traveling to the mainland Europe. More than that, the song is about a soul crushing 9-to-5 job and an escape from it. Mr. Computerless sings about the same as furry computers dance around him. Incredible. Outstanding.

I love that BBC took a risk with this year's entry and though it might not have paid off fully (three zero point in televote streak!), the song has found a lot of admirers. It is the kind of song which worked a lot more for me when I saw it on the stage. The joyous and lively energy of Sam Battle brought a staging which made the song instantly jump in rankings for me; in my opinion, it is the best British entry in so long, and in some ways even better than Sam Ryder's "Space Man."

This entry has become something special for Asturic. About "Eins, Zwei, Drei," he writes:
You ever have that feeling that a song which isn't objectively amazing just hits different? "Eins, Zwei, Drei" is a really special song for me. It captures the quirkiness of the author who also literally built the synthesizer playing in the background, which is just so freaking cool. I quite enjoy his british accent showing here and there - this definitely feels more British than anything the UK has ever sent (even though it's the first time they have lyrics not in English). The lyrics are so cheeky and creative, while also battling the feeling of burnout and showing LMNC's childlike curiosity, which I really relate to. This was my first time ever voting in Eurovision, and I just had to vote for the UK here - so obviously they got a 0 from the public and my heart shattered. The live performance was amazing too, I thought it fit the song really well and LMNC owned the stage. All things considered, there is only one word that really expresses my thoughts on this entry: ROBBED

08. 🇵🇹 Portugal | Rosa - Bandidos do Cante

🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️

Rosa is a contender for the most beautiful song this year. I remember I got emotional when I saw the national final performance of Rosa, there is a beauty in the simplicity of the song, their voices - something which feels authentic. From the very first listen, it has stayed high in my rankings. I was gutted when they didn't qualify, they brought 3 minutes of peace and tranquility to the Eurovision stage and those 3 minutes were stunning. I can see why the simplicity of the song won't make it the most memorable in the eyes of the viewer, but to me it was that simplicity which made me fall in love with it.

Their staging was nothing special, it was minimalistic but it worked well with the song. A big upgrade from FdC. The violin solo could make someone shed a tear. They chose to wear the most casual clothes imaginable for their performance which, respect.

07. 🇺🇦 Ukraine | Ridnym - Leléka

I mentioned Portugal being the most beautiful song this year; if there is any song that gives it some competition in that field, it is Ridnym. The song is written like an exquisite, captivating poem. The lyrics, a mix of English and Ukrainian, provide a message of hope and resilience in a way no song has been able to, a message that resonated with Ukrainians across Europe. The bandura helps to bring a cultural elements from Ukraine to the stage, it is a cherry on top.

Leléka was phenomenal on stage, her melodic voice presented this ethereal song in a way that was passionate. The long note she does, holding a note for  30 seconds (a new record in Eurovision, btw), made me stop breathing for those 30 seconds and I was getting teared up by the end of it. Like Portugal, the simplicity of this performance spoke to me, the dress of Leléka and the contrasting black color felt in taste. It is a magnificent song that was treated with the care it deserves.

06. 🇪🇪 Estonia | Too Epic to Be True - Vanilla Ninja

Look, hear me out, I know it isn't the best of the songs and the performance wasn't the greatest it could have been, but this song is so cheery and fun and nostalgic, I love this style of songs and the package they bring is exactly the kind that will make me fall over for song from the very first listen. They were my favorites in Eesti Laul so them winning was a pleasant surprise for me. To be honest, I wasn't expecting them to qualify but when the results were dropped and I saw that they missed just by a whisker, part of me hoped if only they had gotten a few more points and made it to finals, that would have been epic.

The performance in Vienna was an upgrade from what we saw in Tallinn, it was campy, it was self aware, the slow-mo kick made me giggle. They were having fun on that stage and it showed. I will defend this song till the end of time.

05. 🇭🇷 Croatia | Andromeda - Lelek

With Lithuania, I mentioned the song tickling a theatrical bone, Andromeda gives that exact same feeling to me. The song has deep cultural and historical significance and the performance does justice to it. Their vocals harmonize beautifully and represent their united strength and endurance. What really shined for me though was the performance. It is a staging that has been done to perfection and back, every single shot of it is meaningful and picturesque. I was left in awe when I saw their performance in the semi final, instantly the song jumped for me. There are a lot of examples I can give, the opening shot; when one of them is standing in the air; them reaching out (pictured); the shot near the end focusing on each of them individually; I don't think my words can appreciate it well enough, you need to see it for yourself.

ant512 also has words of praises for this entry, he adds:
Croatia’s entry this year achieves everything a Slavic culture piece could ever wish for. It’s powerful, grand and emotional in the song, lyrics, but also performance without being too pompous or feeling forced. When listening to it for the first time I got intrigued by how you get lulled by the beautiful soft voice and you don’t even notice when it becomes so damn hype. Them harmonising and overlapping makes me unsettled and wary, but in a good way.
The lyrics mixed with the folk sounds tell the story of women choosing death over becoming slaves. The words are direct, but it just makes them hit harder. Comparing them to the Polish (my country) entry last year which included fake mantras of Slavic mythology made up in modern times, these ones express real events that make the lyrics much more potent.
Honestly with how satisfied I was with everything before the semi-final I did not expect much from the performance… God was I wrong. The effects, the costumes, the make-up, the choreography, I could go on. I even liked what they had on the screen in the background when most of the entries had something really mid there. The best part was definitely the camera work giving each performer screen time and boy did they all crush it. All in all it felt like a complete show and in my opinion was one of the highlights of the event.

04. 🇨🇭 Switzerland | Alice - Veronica Fusaro

In what seemed to be a sapphic love song with the first listen, Fusaro forces us to look beyond the lyrics and see the full meaning of the song; discussing the themes of abuse and violence women face in relationships. Fusaro said in one interview, paraphrasing, "the song is all about Alice but Alice never gets to speak for herself."

The indie rock elements of this song make it a pleasant listen for me. I have loved the song ever since it came out, the performance only made it better. It was a little messy and a bit all over the place, but to me it worked perfectly with the song. The guitar solo is full of emotions and song is sung in a heartfelt way. Making "Alice" with the mic wire at the end was such a nice touch.

I still have not gotten over how she didn't qualify for the final - she got 9th in BOTH televote and jury, but when the results were combined, ended up 11th. Both the public and the jury wanted her to qualify but math said no.

03. 🇲🇩 Moldova | Viva, Moldova! - Satoshi

Viva Moldova was the first song of this season I heard and let's just say I have been in a very Moldovan phase of my life ever since. I feel weirdly patriotic to this song, the messaging of it; it touches on a theme of European unity while also celebrating the culture of the country. I have never even stepped foot in Europe but still these elements of the song makes it amazing for me. The song is full of energy and it pumps you up, rightfully so. Quoting Geographystar, "It's like the Maryland flag, it's so brash and extra that it works."
I keep going back to the live performance of this song, even more than my #2 and #1. There is something addictive in Viva Moldova which grips you in and doesn't let you go, and I love it for that. On stage, their use of shaky cam was somewhat controversial but it helps us connect to them more and feel a part of the action. Oh and the long dress of Aliona Moon, an ode to her 2013 performance, was done in a stunning manner.
Overall, this song has left such a positive impact on me, I love what Satoshi introduced all of us to. He should be proud of how well he scored, I know that I am proud of him.

02. 🇷🇴 Romania | Choke Me - Alexandra Căpitănescu

"Love me, make my lungs explode like oh oh oh oh"

After JJ won last year, I was sure we'd get some operatic entries (looking at you France!) and I won't be a big fan of them. Well, Alexandra Căpitănescu proved the second part of that statement wrong. Choke me is a symphonic metal song that fuses together the instrumental you see in metal along with operatic vocals, and I could never have guessed the two can work together so well. I love this song.

Căpitănescu brings with her an energy and a stage presence, a charisma that is unmatched in every way. She reminds me a lot of Erika Vikman from last year, how she owned the stage. Căpitănescu did the same with her dark yet exquisite performance. The song is much deeper than it looks prima facie; I have my own interpretation of it which involves some personal elements from my life but boils down to 'being forced to make peace with something that is killing you while also not losing hope.' The staging was hauntingly beautiful and it got the deeper message of the song across with the phantom figure on the stage. I wasn't instantly sold on the idea of making the struggle tangible but when we got to finally see it during the semi, I realized I should have kept my faith in the delegation. In every way, this was a success and inspiring to many with finishing so high.

Someone else who was choked by the brilliance of this performance - MasterRocket. He also shares his thoughts regarding Choke Me:
This year had so many great songs and performances, and yet Romania's "Choke Me" is my clear winner!
While not my favorite standalone song or staging, the full package absolutely kills. Alexandra Căpitănescu exudes Lady Gaga energy, showing off crazy vocal chops, jumping between operatic belting and heavy metal screaming, the constant genre switching aids in making the song memorable and catchy, and I find the bridge absolutely infectious.
It's got a very epic feel and even though it's mostly dark in tone it ends up being uplifting and empowering by the end of the performance.
The theme of the song is about the struggles young artists face trying to find their place in the world. My interpretation of the song is that the anxiety and pressure of young fame trap and "choke" upcoming artists, who feel like they must "obey" and produce solely for their fans. During the live perfomance Alexandra drops the shackles and confronts that choking feeling head on, ultimately removing it and becoming her own master of her art and creative choice. Maybe if the juries looked a little deeper they would have noticed that Choke Me is not a NSFW song in any way, but about an artist overcoming their anxiety and finding her calling as singer. 3rd place was still amazing, but a win and perhaps Bucharest 2027 was within reach.

01. 🇷🇸 Serbia | Kraj Mene - Lavina

I distinctly remember the morning I listened to Kraj Mene for the first time, it was Monday, 2nd of March, the Super Saturday had just happened on which 6 songs were selected. I was going through the 6 new songs, I left Serbia for the last as I didn't have much high hopes from it, 2024 and 2025 both were not my type of songs and the national final isn't particularly exciting. Eventually I got around to Serbia on that fine morning and as soon as the song started, I realized it is something special. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen - those growls, the overlapping vocals, the intensity, everything left me speechless for a few moments.
I don't listen to metal all that much but if there is one sub-genre in metal that I enjoy the most, it is prog metal. The way this song builds from the very first second to those screams and the ultimate vigorous chorus, it is a journey the song takes us on. Every single time, the song gives me chills. It is easily my most streamed song from this year, especially if we include the english version and the symphonic version. The song also has decent lyricism in my opinion. The performance on stage was everything I wanted from them, those outfits, the pain they showed, the pyro, the burning sword - they kept what made the PzE performance memorable for me and elevated everything.
Over the past year or so, I've probably heard more metal than in my entire life before that, and as a result of that, I have come to recognize how challenging such growling vocals can be. Luka, the lead singer of Lavina, delivers those vocals perfectly on the stage but stull due to a genre bias of the juries, didn't get as much love. I'd have preferred if the song got more recognition it deserves.

With this season coming to an end, I am already looking forward to Sofia 2027 (and Bangkok 2026! This November is gonna be the inaugural edition of Eurovision Asia, so excited for it). The loss of 5 countries this year was felt greatly and I hope EBU takes such decisions necessary to get them back in the competition and enable us to enjoy Eurovision for how it is meant to be enjoyed.

I have talked a lot about all the songs, would love to hear the thoughts of others as well!

Were you listening to a different UK song, it may just be my opinion, although the almost "nul points" does tend to agree with me, but I thought this was the worst entry to come from this island nation for a while.

I just didn't get it, although both the descriptions above have made me think about it a little.

Maybe it's just me and my age.
