SUGGESTION: Notifications For Replies to Comments

Comments and Notifications

There's a reason JetPunk has notifications. When something that concerns us is released on JetPunk, we get told through that little bell in the top bar, so that we don't have to look for it ourselves. This is very useful, and even if you don't want to receive notifications for a specific aspect of JetPunk, you can easily turn it off in "Manage Notifications" under the "Your Account" tab.

Comments are also a convenient part of JetPunk, whether on Quizzes, Word Search Puzzles, Blogs, Charts, etc, they are a place for people to share what they liked about it, what they didn't like, and perhaps even suggestions for improvement; all so that the creator of the Quiz/Puzzle/Blog/Chart can have a better idea of what to do next time. It is also useful to clear confusion. For example, there could be something stated on a quiz that someone believes is false. The comment section can help with either correcting that false claim or convincing the other person that it is indeed right all along!

Now, these two are connected. You get notified when someone posts a comment on your Quiz/Puzzle/Blog/Chart, so that you can receive the feedback and clarify things for confused users. But what if you, on a Quiz/Puzzle/Blog/Chart that isn't your own, post a comment that is one that needs a reply? Surely, you will get notified if somebody replies!

Well, no, actually. And that's a problem. I don't know how many people are going to read this, but in this blog, I am going to explain why JetPunk needs to add notifications for when someone replies to your comment.

A Personal Example

This is the example that inspired me to write this blog. As a fan of the science fiction show, Doctor Who, naturally, I would subscribe to a JetPunk user by the name of DrWhoFanJ. I would also naturally take this user's word search puzzle, by the name of Doctor Who Stories. However, I noticed some problems with this puzzle, so I mentioned them in the comments. I waited to see if I would get a notification for a reply, but I never got one. Only until recently did I find out that DrWhoFanJ actually replied to my comment the same day that I posted the comment, and I had no idea!

What's the point of replying to a comment if the user who posted the original comment isn't going to see it? It's not such a big deal in this example, but there could be examples in which it does matter.

Verdict

Maybe there is a reason JetPunk chose not to do this, but I honestly have no idea what it could possibly be. If users don't want to receive notifications of replies, they can just turn the option off in the "Manage Notifications" tab. Is there something I'm missing? Otherwise, I see many benefits to adding this to JetPunk. Am I the only one who has noticed this before? I hope you all agree with me, and if you don't, tell me why in the comments (but if I reply, don't expect to be notified about it).

In my mind the point of comments are to inform the content maker on can inaccuracy in their content. Therefore it is nesscary for the maker to be notified of such comments. for the person who posts the comment, it is not really nesscary for them to be notified creating an almost Social Media environment which JetPunk generally likes to avoid. However this would be a good idea for groups.

This would make sense. However, I don't see what the need for replies would be if the original commenter never sees them. I agree with what you say, but I still think it should at least be an option.

People always ask this question, and QM's response that it would like cause arguments due to people coming back to comments

Also QM doesn't want JP as a social media site

Yes, this is the reason. No reply notifications are to avoid long strands of arguments where neither person wants to end the reply chain.

If you comment on whatever in the first place, it is with the assumption that you care enough to go back and check to see if the author responded. It's your job, not JetPunk's. I do agree with the point above that adding something more to groups would be great. However, neither comments nor groups define JetPunk, so it all comes down to what Quizmaster thinks is best for his site.

I do agree with the point about it causing arguments, and I will admit that it never crossed my mind and is a valid reason for not notifying a user for a reply.

However, I disagree with your other point. I have commented on content before and not remembered about it. What if someone replied years later? While I completely agree with the idea of preventing arguments, and also don't want JetPunk as a social media site, I still am not convinced that the cons outweigh the pros and am still in favour of my point (and am also still open to counter arguments!)

This is something I have also been wanting for quite some time, and that example you used only solidified my point further as, while I could reply to inform you I had indeed made the changes you requested, I had no way of knowing you were aware of them unless and until you replied yourself!

I’ve resorted to instead Googling JP for my username and progressively less recent dates until I hit either something new or ones I’ve already seen!

This was brought up before and Quizmaster said that it is a horrible idea.
