JetPunkology
JetPunkology is the study of JetPunk. No, it's not an official term, I just made it up.
I have already written quite a few blogs explaining a phenomenon related to JetPunk. A lot compared to how long I've writing them for (I wrote my first one back in April). Therefore, I consider myself a minor scholar in the field of JetPunkology.
Okay, enough with the silliness. Here is my entry for the Summer Blog Project and it's on the subject of Word Search themes. In this blog, I will be doing numerous observations on JetPunk's Word Search to determine which themes are the most popular among the players of JetPunk's Word Search puzzles. I will start by examining my own non-featured puzzles, then I will examine the most recent user-created puzzles, and finally I will observe featured puzzles #401 to #450. They will be observed by their themes and number of plays. Let's get started, shall we?
My Own Puzzles
I first decided to do an analysis of my own puzzles. To do this, I assigned a topic to each of my puzzles (some had more than one topic). Any puzzle to which I could not assign a topic was labelled as Miscellaneous. I then added up my total number of plays for each topic and divided it by the number of puzzles. The reason I did this is because, say, one topic has ten puzzles whereas another only has one. The one with ten is obviously going to have more plays, so it is better to do them all as an average.
Now, I did not include all my puzzles. I had to exclude five of them, and here's why:
1. My three featured puzzles were excluded from the count because they are obviously going to be played far more than any of my other puzzles.
2. I have one French puzzle, which are taken far more often than English puzzles, so it was excluded.
3. I created a puzzle ("Solar System") after I got the idea for this blog. I excluded it to avoid bias.
36 puzzles thus remain. On May 25, I did the count for all of these and plotted the data in the chart below.
I was surprised. I thought for sure that either Geography or Miscellaneous would be to×p. It seems, in non-featured puzzles, television is somehow more popular.
Of course, there are other variables unable to be controlled in this graph. I did not make all of these puzzles in one day. The longer a puzzle has existed, the more plays it is likely to have.
"Stranger Things" was my first puzzle. This could be an explanation as to why Television has the highest average.
One other thing I should mention. I released my puzzle "St. Patrick's Day" on St. Patrick's Day. I did this on purpose so that it would get a lot of plays (it worked).
User Puzzles
Now, let's see what themes are the most popular to make on JetPunk. To do this, I obtained the 50 most recent user-created puzzles that were not any of mine. Again, this is done to avoid bias. For this graph, I measured the number of puzzles while ignoring the takes, as this section is just about how popular each subject is to make. Measured on May 26, 2026; here is the chart.
It should be mentioned here that, unlike the other chart, each puzzle was only put into one category rather than multiple. Thus, some categorisations can be disputedly different. But overall, it seems that geography puzzles are the most popular to make.
So far, the sections we've covered are most popular to take and most popular to make. Now, we have to examine the main part of JetPunk's Word Search: The featured puzzles!
The Featured Puzzles
Since all the featured puzzles have around the same number of takes, this graph is similar to the last one. I assigned a theme (just one, again) to each featured puzzle from #401 to #450 (no Megas) and plotted them in another pie chart, seen below. (I included my own puzzles for this one as I'm not the one who featured them.)
A lot less diverse! It seems that puzzles with broad topics are more likely to get featured! One thing that surprised me about this graph, however, is that language has the highest percentage, at 36%. I guess this means that if you want a puzzle featured, do something fun and cool with words!
Conclusion
Though there are other factors, as discussed, these graphs conclude that the most popular word search topics to take on JetPunk are pretty diverse, and not really specific, but Television and Geography are both really popular. It also seems that the most popular to make is Geography, and the most likely to get featured are those about Language or a completely obscure topic. If you don't have a popular/featured puzzle yet, and you want one, these are the topics that will get you the most success. Good luck!
