100,000 Takes! + InsaniOctober

+8

Earlier this year on July 22nd I hit 100,000 takes on JetPunk!!! It’s not everyday that you add a new digit to your total takes, so I figure it's pretty special when it happens. I hit 10,000 takes roughly three years ago, so it’s been a long time since it last happened to me. I don’t recall doing anything special to celebrate 10,000, but seeing as 100,000 is 10x larger than 10,000 I think that merits some sort of celebration.

So, I’m going to publish 1 quiz everyday through the month of October - NO EXCEPTIONS. The only exception to that rule is on Saturdays, where I’ll instead be publishing a blog. Every day I'll also be updating this blog with a link to whatever I posted along with a short blurb describing how I came up with the quiz, why I wanted to create it, any challenges I faced, etc. If you've read my Fifteenth Letter blog, then it's basically like what I wrote for those quizzes. I'm calling this challenge InsaniOctober, named in honour The June Zoom by YouTuber Zoom Zike, which this challenge is heavily based on.

You may have noticed that we're already partway through October, so you may be able to guess that I've already uploaded a few quizzes. The rest of this blog will pretty much just be talking about them. Until tomorrow of course, when I upload my next quiz, so make sure you check back here often. Hope you enjoy this sampling of what the rest of this month has to bring!

October 1st: Community - Ass Crack Bandit Lyrics

Community is one of my favourite TV shows of all time. It's really not a stretch to say that it's my favourite show of all time, as a matter of fact. A while ago I had the idea to make a quiz based on it and the one I wanted to make was a lyrics quiz based on one of the songs in the show: Ass Crack Bandit. It's a silly title, but it's a really catchy song. It was written by Ben Folds, who I've come to learn is quite the celebrated musician.

Lyric quizzes are some of my favourite quizzes to make on JetPunk. It's not everyday you get to use {curly} {braces} in your answer and it's a nice change of pace from the usual types of quizzes I make. I was able to make this quiz pretty quickly but I decided not to upload it at the last minute because I was worried that the use of the word 'Ass' in the title would get my quiz taken down (or worse, my account becomes moderated again)! Doing a quick search for other quizzes with ass in the title revealed nothing. I figured that since I wasn't using it in a vulgar or sexual manner that I would be fine but the idea still worried me. For a while my plan was to just replace every instance of 'ass' with 'butt' which, while funny, felt like betraying the heart and soul of the song. What ultimately made me decide to upload the quiz was that I saw other posts on JetPunk that used much coarser language than ass, and felt like I could upload it without being immediately executed. But Quizmaster, if you're reading this, I will go through with my butt plan if you're not comfortable with ass. Just let me know ;P

October 2nd: Gaming in the 1980s

I didn't really explain this in the intro to this blog, because it was kinda wordy, but this isn't my first time posting a quiz everyday throughout the month of October. I actually did this challenge last year, too, I just never got around to posting about it. I'm mentioning it now because this quiz is a sequel to a quiz I made last InsaniOctober: Gaming in the 1970s. It was one of my favourite quizzes that I had made that month and always wanted to make a sequel to it, but never got around to it for some reason.

For years I've been trying to make a sort of annual gaming recap quiz, where I'd make a quiz about all the major gaming things that happened that year. These quizzes unfortunately never came to fruition because I'd always forget about them until near the end of the year, by which point I've already forgotten everything major that had happened! I then thought about making a quiz for past years, but I couldn't come up with a good starting point. Picking a random year would feel... weird, and picking the first year that video games really existed (1970) didn't leave enough answers for a full quiz. Then I came up with the genius idea of making a quiz based on the whole decade, with one answer from each year. That became Gaming in the 1970s, which as I stated previously I uploaded last InsaniOctober. I had always meant to post a sequel shortly after the challenge ended, but it just didn't end up happening. I think the main reason it took so long was from just having so many options to pick from for sequels. The 1970s was when the gaming industry started to establish itself so there were relatively few games, but the 1980s was when it really took off. So many iconic games, so many options, so little answers on this quiz! Having to narrow it all down to ten was difficult. Big shout out to Wikipedia, which has articles on the most influential games for each year. Thanks, Wikipedia!

October 3rd: Sonic CD Stages

A little known (and maybe controversial?) fact about me is that Sonic CD is my favourite Sonic game. In fact, it's one of only two Sonic games that I have played to completion (if you guess the other one by the end of the month you win a cookie), and that's not because I haven't played any of the other Sonic games. I just don't really like them. I've played Colours, Generations, Rush, Mania, 1, 2, but I never felt compelled to finish any of them. Sonic CD... just speaks to me. Maybe it's because I like the way its designed. Maybe it's because it was one the first games I played as a kid. Maybe it's because it has a special place in my heart. Whatever the reason, I adore this game. I found it a little shocking that there were no Sonic CD quizzes on JetPunk. I know it's not the most popular Sonic game, but I figured somebody would've at least accidentally made a quiz about it at one point. In any case, that left the door open for me to publish an honestly quite basic quiz about the game. Fair warning for the rest of InsaniOctober, you should probably expect the majority of the quizzes I make to be simpler quizzes about obscure games like this, rather than something more grand and exciting. But I will try to make something great sometimes! My motto is: Striving for Originality.

October 4th: Sucker Punch Productions Games

This quiz got it's upload schedule moved around twice. Once, when I realized it would go live the same day as this blog, and once again when I realized that I needed to reschedule a quiz since I had discovered that a version of it already existed.

Anyways, I've been a fan of Sucker Punch Productions for a long time. Or at least, their Sly Cooper series. If you asked me what my favourite video game series of all time was, I'd probably say Sly Cooper. Infamous never really interested me all that much, though I do intend on playing Ghost of Tsushima sometime soon. From what I've heard, they've got an amazing track record when it comes to the quality of their games. I made a quiz similar to this one but for Alphadream, who're probably best known for creating the Mario & Luigi series of games (unless you're really into Hamtaro). After I made that one, I wanted to make another for a different studio, and Sucker Punch was the first one I thought of. I held off on releasing it though, since I didn't think there was enough answer variety. I guess. When Sucker Punch announced that Ghost of Yotei was going to be releasing soon, it reminded me of my unpublished quiz, and taking another look at it with fresh eyes, I'm realizing that I probably didn't need to postpone it for so long. But hey, it's helping me out now, so who can really complain? Certainly not me!

October 5th: 100,000 Takes! + InsaniOctober

Well hey, if it isn't the blog you're reading right now! I'm not really sure what I have left to say about this blog that I haven't already said. I kind of already explained it's purpose, why I made it and every challenge that came up while creating it.

Oh hey, here's something I can talk about: the thumbnail! Every blog needs a thumbnail and I knew right from the get-go that I wanted this one to be the number 100,000. I looked around on Wikimedia Commons and... it's all just money. Getting a good, square shaped thumbnail was impossible since every image had the word "DOLLAR" on it in massive print and there was no good way to crop it out. Eventually I just gave in, opened up GIMP and covered up the word DOLLARS with TAKES. It's a pretty creative solution to a challenge such as this.

P.S. Yes, the blog announcing the challenge counts as the Saturday blog I'm releasing during the challenge. It didn't write itself! I put alot of work into it. Future blogs will probably be closer to what you'd expect a blog to be.

October 6th: What Does DS Stand For?

This is an idea I've had for a long time. While I only created this quiz in July earlier this year, the idea of making a quiz where every answer's initials are DS was something that's been rolling around in my head for a while. The reason I didn't create it sooner was because I couldn't come up with anything other Dual Screen, the full name of the DS.

I was inspired to take this quiz back up when I took the People with D Initials quiz, which had a person with the initials 'DS'. From there I decided to use other JetPunk D quizzes as sources for answers, like Musical Acts by Letter - D, where I knew I could find a whole bunch of D answers. This allowed me to collect enough answers to constitute a whole quiz without having to drive myself insane!

Spoilers for the quiz, but two answers that I decided not to use were Dr. Strangelove and dim sum. I wasn't very familiar with dim sum, but I figured that since it was a food that I could sort of describe how it's made for the hint? But it turns out that its really more of a meal? I think? It's sort of like brunch, but a specific kind of brunch? I wasn't sure how to describe it, so I decided not to include it. As for Dr. Strangelove... well, I think that should be immediately apparent once you take the quiz.

October 7th: Tomodachi Life: Livin’ the Dream Lyrics

Tomodachi Life is one of my favourite games of all time. It’s super funny, super charming, and a huge part of that comes from the Music Hall. You get a bunch of template songs in a bunch of different genres which you’re able to change the lyrics of and have your Miis sing it. While the real entertainment is definitely in writing your own lyrics, there’s still alot of fun to be had with sticking with the defaults since they’re pretty iconic in their own right. I’ve made lyric quizzes for two of the other Tomodachi Life songs - the techno and musical songs - and the one I released today was of the rap song. Those are probably my three favourite Tomodachi Life songs, with pop coming in a close fourth. The first two are enjoyable to listen to on their own, but I mainly like the rap song because it’s really easy to write funny lyrics for.

Who said yak butter?

Me.

Please buy my new CD.

October 8th: Word Wheel

This quiz was inspired by a puzzle game I played years ago called Word Wheel by Powgi. The rules of the game are pretty much the same as the rules in the quiz, with the only difference being that the Powgi version accepted any word that could be made in the wheel whereas my version only accepts certain words indicated by the hints. Originally my plan was to make it more similar to the Powgi version, but I ultimately had to change it because the word list was filled with obscure words that no-one was ever going to get unless they were typing in random letters. My version is a little more similar to the Generator Puzzles by kiwirage, which I was definitely also inspired by.

October 9th: Video Games by Letter - N

This quiz is an instalment in one of my oldest series. It's exactly what it says on the tin - various video game related terms that start with the letter N. You'd probably think that series like this would've had at least one quiz for every letter of the alphabet, but I've actually only made one for half the alphabet. I want to make sure that I don't only use Nintendo related answers, so it takes a while to make an instalment in this series due to me having to research other answers as well enough information to create a hint for each answer. Over the years it's become a bit easier since I've deliberately been exposing myself to more and more non-Nintendo games but even still I sometimes catch myself writing a quiz like this that's like 80% Nintendo stuff. I also don't want to just name the title of the game, I also want to have things like characters and locations and items. You know, the same amount of information I would give to a Nintendo franchise. Alot of my older Video Games by Letter quizzes sort of exist in this weird state of not being varied enough to be a a general video gaming quiz, but also not focused enough to be a Nintendo quiz. You can tell which quizzes are the old ones because I put the letter in the title in quotation marks. The new quizzes are quotation-free (or at least, the titles are). If you're interested in taking these quizzes, I recommend just taking the new ones.

October 10th: Sly Cooper Countries

OK, I almost completely forgot about this challenge. It wasn't until 11:30pm that I realized I hadn't uploaded a quiz yet. For a second I also got a little worried that I forgot to upload a quiz yesterday too since I didn't see a link to it on the blog. Thankfully, that was just me forgetting to update the blog. Bit of a scare, but it means this challenge is still going strong!

As you can imagine, with only 30 minutes left to create a quiz, I didn't really have the time to make anything super crazy. I started racking my brain, thinking of what games I've played recently that I haven't made a quiz on. I've been playing through Ratchet & Clank and I was originally going to do a quiz based on that game, but the quiz I wanted to make (where you name all the levels in the game) was already made by a different user. It did remind me of an old idea I had, which was a Travelling Map style quiz where you have to name the countries found within the Sly Cooper series. Sadly doing the map with the animations would've taken more than 30 minutes, so I had to settle for just naming the countries. One day, though.

See you tomorrow!

Congrats on 100,000! Nice blog. I am torn between newer gen sonic games and something totally random from olden days. I’ll guess sonic spinball. Also, have you ever seen the video game years?

I haven't heard of The Video Game Years, but it looks interesting! I'll have to watch it soon.

Also no, Sonic Spinball was not the answer. I have played it though. It's... uh... not great. lol. I'm more of a fan of the Archie comic adaption of the game.

Congrats man! I love your quizzes and I've now realized ive been doing them for like 4 or 5 years now. I also hit 10,000 a couple weeks ago and never did anything. Go me for procrastinating.

Out of the hundreds of thousands of users on this site, only 63 have over one million total takes. While small, it is also significantly larger than the 7 users it was just a few short years ago. Such an achievement may not be as unlikely as you think!
