Chapter 7 - Escaping My Mind
The wall.
Just as endless as ever, its long, blue length still incomprehensible to me. I will never know how long it really is, because it could go on forever. This place is nice, but I don't want to stay. I'm ready to leave, I'm ready to get out, to possibly escape this world which I still know nothing about. Jeppy has guided me across empty oceans of white, sailing like a ship with me as the captain. But unlike a captain, I don't know where to go or how to get there. All I know is that the way to go is up.
I turn Jeppy off once we reach the wall. Before I get off, I grab my diamond axe and ladders. Half the ladders fit in one hand, and I pocket the rest. I hold the diamond axe in my other hand, and hop off Jeppy's back.
"I suppose it's time," I say to Jeppy. A tear forms in my eye, but I hold it back. Crying over a computer cursor is pretty weird, but I have such a strong bond with it that I feel like I can't let go. I wrap my arms around Jeppy, and hold the hug for a little while before letting go. "I'll miss you Jeppy" I whisper.
The wall seems taller than it did when I first got here, but I'm sure it's just my mind playing tricks. A full stack of ladders is plenty to make it to the top, so, without hesitation, I place the first one on the wall. It sticks in place, and with Minecraft logic on my side, I know it won't come off. I place the second above it, and start climbing. Grabbing the rungs is a challenge since my hands are quite full, but I make it work.
One after another, each new ladder gets placed as I ascend the wall. I don't want to look down because I don't know if I'm scared of heights or not. I don't particularly want to find out. So, I keep my head straight and my body moving.
The climb doesn't take long. To my right is the search box, which is just as big as it looks from the ground. It sticks out a fair amount from the wall, enough for me to stand on if I need to. Once I pass the top of the box, I decide to take a break and step off the ladders, transitioning myself to the top of the box. I don't look down as I get off the ladders, but once I'm on the box, I turn around.
"Wow," I whisper. Standing on top of the tallest possible structure here, I finally get a glimpse of this world. As far as my eyes can see, there's an endless white floor covered with a range of letters and numbers, big and small, of all different colors and fonts. Concealed by two long black walls on either side, the sheer size of this cage-like website is mind-boggling. If I had never found Jeppy, I would practically be a lost soul, wondering like a dog lost in the woods. I look down, and my fear of heights kicks in a little. I decide to sit on the edge of the box because I think it'll make me feel safer.
Far below me is Jeppy. Looking at the cursor is like looking at an ant on the ground. I'm so high up, and the ceiling is maybe only 10 more ladders away. But the vast world in front of me begs for attention. So I sit here for a while, just gazing out onto the horizon. If you could see what I see, you too would be as mesmerized as I am. As I sit here, I think about everything I've done so far. Not much, really. I walked the endless blue wall, rode Jeppy across the great white plains, visited multiple quizzes to obtain essential goods, and contemplated all the words and letters I've read. Each word here tells a different story, some making more sense than others. But now, at the end of my journey, they all make sense.
"Time to go," I tell myself. It's been a long... however much time I've spent here. Time to get out, even if it means leaving Jeppy behind. Jeppy kept me company, but isn't even a real horse. I need to interact with people again.
I get up off the edge of the box and make my way to the ladders. I have about 15 left, which should be enough, I hope. I continue climbing, placing each ladder one after the other.
I finally reach the top. I can't really touch the ceiling because I'm holding my diamond axe in my only free hand. However, I do use the axe to touch the hazy roof of this world. It feels like the same quality as the blue wall, but I can't tell for sure. What I can tell for sure is that there's something beyond the ceiling, something more. "Only one way to find out," I say with a hint of hope.
CHOP. I swing the axe once at the ceiling and a crack forms.
CHOP. Another swing, and a piece of the ceiling breaks off and falls to the ground.
CHOP. I keep swinging, and more of the ceiling breaks. After about 10 swings, my arm gets tired. However, I've managed to make a hole in the ceiling. A hole I can fit through.
"This is it," I say. "This is the end." I don't even look back at Jeppy; I just crawl through the hole. At first it's complete darkness. But not long after I see a bright white light in the distance. This light gets bigger and brighter, and it begins to surround me.
I wake up sweating. I rip off the covers of my bed, which are soaked. Looking around, I see the familiar sight of my bedroom. The windows are full of daylight, and birds sing outside. I glance at my alarm clock. It reads 8:20 am. I must have slept through the alarm.
"It was all a dream?"
I truly hope you enjoyed this series. I also hoped you liked the ending; I thought about many other endings, but decided on this one. Now that I've finished this story, I'll work on other blogs I have in mind. I probably won't do another story blog series for a while (Astana idk how you can do like 5 at once) but I will be doing much more, so stay awake unlike our protagonist. Thanks for all the amazing support, and sorry about the inconsistent posts, I got a little slow at the end. But I think it's still great.
To all my fellow JetPunkers, much thanks! Sincerely, LuckyCat.
