History of the pyramids
The Great pyramid of Giza is the largest pyramid in Egypt. It served as the tomb of pharaoh Khufu who ruled during the Fourth dynasty of the old kingdom. Built c. 2600 BC, over a period of about 26 years, the pyramid is the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world, It is the most famous monument of the Giza pyramid Complex, which is part of the Unesco World Heritage Site Memphis and its Necropolis". It is situated at the northeastern end of the line of the three main pyramids at Giza. The Other two pyramids are named for the son of Khufu which is Khafre and his grandson Menkaure.
The three small queen pyramids east of the pyramid of Cheops were for his mother, Hetepheres I, the head queen of Pharaoh Snofroe, and his two head queens Meritites and Henutzen, the mothers of his sons and successors Djedefre and Khafre. Hetepheres survived Cheops, died and was buried in Cheops' residence at Giza. An accidental find in her grave made it known that Snofroe was Cheops' father. Hetepheres was buried in this tomb until her pyramid, the northernmost Queen's Pyramid, was completed. Cheops belonged to Snofroe's younger generation of sons and was probably born when Dashur was the center of construction activities. Cheops would then have ascended the throne when he was 25-30 years old and his older brothers Nefermaath and Rahotep, the builders of the pyramids of Meidum and Dashhur, had already died. Cheops is said to have ruled for 23 to 30 years. He was succeeded by his son Jedefre, who built a smaller but striking pyramid in the area of Abu Rush, north of Giza. Djedefre died early and was unexpectedly
