History of the pyramids

The Great pyramid of Giza is the largest pyramid in Egypt. It served as the tomb of pharaoh Khufu who ruled during the Fourth dynasty of the old kingdom. Built c. 2600 BC, over a period of about 26 years, the pyramid is the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world, It is the most famous monument of the Giza pyramid Complex, which is part of the Unesco World Heritage Site Memphis and its Necropolis". It is situated at the northeastern end of the line of the three main pyramids at Giza. The Other two pyramids are named for the son of Khufu which is Khafre and his grandson Menkaure. 

The three small queen pyramids east of the pyramid of Cheops were for his mother, Hetepheres I, the head queen of Pharaoh Snofroe, and his two head queens Meritites and Henutzen, the mothers of his sons and successors Djedefre and Khafre. Hetepheres survived Cheops, died and was buried in Cheops' residence at Giza. An accidental find in her grave made it known that Snofroe was Cheops' father. Hetepheres was buried in this tomb until her pyramid, the northernmost Queen's Pyramid, was completed. Cheops belonged to Snofroe's younger generation of sons and was probably born when Dashur was the center of construction activities. Cheops would then have ascended the throne when he was 25-30 years old and his older brothers Nefermaath and Rahotep, the builders of the pyramids of Meidum and Dashhur, had already died. Cheops is said to have ruled for 23 to 30 years. He was succeeded by his son Jedefre, who built a smaller but striking pyramid in the area of ​​Abu Rush, north of Giza. Great Sphinx of Giza

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion. Facing directly from west to east, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx appears to represent the pharaoh Khafre. The original shape of the Sphinx was cut from bedrock, and has since been restored with layers of limestone blocks. It measures 73 m (240 ft) long from paw to tail, 20 m (66 ft) high and 19 m (62 ft) wide

The Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and one of the most recognizable statues in the world.

Build style

The pyramids of Giza have a height of 138.5m tall (454 ft). The volume/weight of the pyramid is approximately 2.6 million m3 (92 million cu ft). It is made out of 2.3 million blocks. And it was build by more than 100.000 Egyptians and the Pyramids were build in less than 20 years. Than is 1/2 of their lifestyle, because back then most Egyptians don't make it until 40 years old.
