I use The Jungle to teach history students about exploitation during the rise of consumerism. It’s wholly unpleasant to read, especially knowing all the disgusting details are based on his extensive research into the actual goings on of the industry. The plot isn’t the greatest, and it’s more like an exposé than a novel. I only recommend it if you’re not squeamish… I struggled to get through some of it!
