The Usual Suspects and the Art of Forgetting

Forgetting

I was re watching The Usual Suspects and I noticed something, the movie tells you that everyone except Verbal will die, and yet it still comes as a surprise when Fenster's killed and even more so when Hockney and McManus die, less so for Keaton but it still applies. They do the same thing with the cocaine, Kujan literally says "... dope that wasn't there" and yet later you feel surprised when Keaton says "there's no. Fucking. Coke!" The way they do this is simple, they bring it up once and either never say it again till it's revealed or subtly hint at it. It reminds me of Romeo & Juliet, the prologue clearly says Romeo and Juliet are gonna die, but as you keep reading you start rooting for the characters and then you forget they're going to die. The Usual Suspects does the same thing, almost two hours go by until the reveal each respective thing, so it comes as great shock.

That or I have terrible memory
