I Watched Movies in 2025. Here is Some Info About Them.

+8

I like movies. If you've seen any of my quizzes (in my Cinemasorsa account), read my older blogs, frequented the JetPunk Discord server, or read my interview by Poirot, this should be old news. Thus, the year 2025 for me included watching quite a few movies. At some point, I thought about writing a blog about this year and my film adventure, which would give me an opportunity to better visualize and create stats about the movies I watched.

This blog will go through the types of movies I saw, how I liked them, and what my 2025 in film looked like. This means that this is more of a fun project for myself above anything else, leading to the blog having a more breakneck structure, and less polished look. I still hope at least someone else will be interested in these statistics.

Notes:
  • This is partially inspired by patisseire's great similar blog from 2024. Credit where credit is due: it did give me the idea of writing a JetPunk blog about this topic.
  • These are strictly full-length feature films, so series, short films, documentaries, etc. are excluded.
  • I am not the type of person to overly analyze and track everything I consume. This is why there might be some movies I forgot to include. Similar to this:
  • This only includes movies I watched for the first time in 2025. I did also rewatch plenty of other films I had seen prior to this, but did not really care to log rewatches, and I feel like trying to include them would not make much sense regarding what I'm going for with this blog.

My Year 2025 in Film

The Basics

Going into 2025, I did not have any goals or dreams regarding movies. The most I had in mind was my watchlist with several films I planned on watching at some point, and the fact I was going to watch as many new movies as possible. Did I succeed? Well, the watchlist is still large and I watched a total of 92 new movies during 2025. Just shy of 100, pity that.

I tried to really broaden my horizon with watching classic, older films that had always felt kinda intimidating and too grand for my scope. I also wanted to see movies from around the world, including my home country, Finland. Despite this, I did not stress too much about what I should watch, and went with which film felt like would be a good time whenever choosing what to watch.

I mostly watched movies at home, with also visiting the cinema and watching pictures from the big screen whenever my financial state allowed for this. Speaking of financial state, I did not use that many streaming services you had to pay for. I did have Disney+ for the better part of the year, but have been living without it for several months now (and seeing the direction they're going for right now, that probably was the right choice).

The other sites, including but not limited to, were Yle Areena (free streaming site owned by Finland's broadcasting company), Cineast (another free site that I was able to access with my library card, genuinely a goldmine for content!), and occasionally (ahem) sailing the high seas.

The Countries

Now for something that interested me: where were all of these movies from? I logged the country for every film I watched, made compromises whenever a film had multiple countries of origin listed, and made a map. Below is every country I watched a movie from, in yellow.

Not bad, all things considered. In case you're wondering why Russia is in a different shade, it's because I watched a movie from the Soviet Union, Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris, and figured this would be the smartest way to include it on the map. Is there room to improve? Most definitely. There are massive blind spots on the map and almost all the movies were from the western world. Almost nothing from Latin America, nothing from Africa, with Asia being very empty as well (nothing from China or India!) This does set a good challenge to me regarding 2026, though, as there definitely are ways for me to broaden my horizon.

Below is a table of the number of films I watched by country. No surprise, the US clears every other country and that will probably be the case in future years as well.

# of moviesCountry
59United States
5Finland, United Kingdom
4Japan
3France
2Brazil, Canada, South Korea, Sweden
1Australia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Soviet Union

The Years

When were these movies made? Did I have any success in attempting to watch more so-called old movies? Below is a breakdown of the decades the movies I watched were released in.

Quite recent, as you can tell, but a decent amount of older flicks as well, some from a century ago. The oldest movie I watched was Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush from 1925, and saw a total of 7 movies released in 2025. Pretty interesting, not gonna lie. I would say I had some success in attempting to see older movies, but newer cinema seemed to interest me more. To be completely honest, I wasn't expecting 23 movies from the 2020s.

The Ratings

Of course, I had to rate every movie I watched. I feel like Letterboxd's 5-star system is the best way to rate, which is why I also used it in this blog. At this point, I have to admit that I did not go out of my way to voluntarily watch movies that I had no interest in, or were almost universally considered bad. That's why my average rating score is so high, this is what happens when you want to watch movies that are considered great instead of movies that might be a waste of your time. Not the best mentality, but I digress. Below is a breakdown of the 92 films's ratings.

I also wanted to rank my favorite movies, so here goes. I picked my 5 favorites and also 5 other movies I wanted to give some love to (the latter not being in any particular order). It was hard to choose, but I'm happy with what I chose and the ratings I gave. Who knows, maybe upon a few rewatches I completely disagree with the orders.

My Top 5 movies I watched this year

Goodfellas

Year: 1990Director: Martin ScorseseMy rating: 5/5
My favorite movie I saw (for the first time) this year, and the only one I gave a perfect score. This is Scorsese at the top of his game, with every single element working seamlessly in this gangster film about a mafia member Henry Hill. Brilliant writing, performances, pacing, funny and gripping at the same time.

The Hunt

Year: 2012Director: Thomas VinterbergMy rating: 4,5/5
Don't get me wrong, there were so many movies that flirted with the 5/5 score, with The Danish drama starring Mads Mikkelsen definitely being one of them. The man himself stars as a kindergarten teacher in a small town and becomes a center of mass hysteria regarding accusations of very dark things. Not a light watch, and probably the only movie I watched that made me cry uncontrollably. Those church and dinner scenes, plain cinema.

Memories of Murder

Year: 2003Director: Bong Joon HoMy rating: 4,5/5
The dude who made Parasite sure knows his stuff, shocker. The movie focuses on a series of murders on women and detectives who try to solve the case, whatever it takes and whatever methods were possible in 1980s' South Korea. The tone is constantly great, pictures despair and anger perfectly, and probably doesn't have a single subpar scene. This is my call to watch more of Bong's filmography, as you should too.

One Battle After Another

Year: 2025Director: Paul Thomas AndersonMy rating: 4,5/5
Honestly? It wasn't as perfect as everyone hyped it out to be. Is it still awesome? Hell yes. Perhaps the most talked about movie of 2025, it is my pick for the year's best and something I had no idea PTA had in him. You've probably heard enough about what the movie is about and how good the acting, technical aspects, and themes are, so all I'll say is that I agree. Works like this is why I keep going to the movies.

Moonlight

Year: 2016Director: Barry JenkinsMy rating: 4,5/5
One of the most human films I've ever seen. This is a tale of a young man struggling with his identity and abuse, focusing on three chapters of his life. The story is packed with emotion and it looks and sounds incredible. And all this with an insanely minimal budget. I'm glad the Academy gave it the love it deserved. (speaking of, consider Anora to be the sixth-best movie, it was a close call between these two)

...and 5 movies I recommend watching

Paprika

Year: 2006Director: Satoshi KonMy rating: 4/5
Perfect Blue is easily one of my favorite animated movies, so it was long overdue that I'd watch something else directed by Satoshi Kon. While it obviously wasn't as great and grand, Paprika is a pretty awesome movie on its own. It focuses on a detective who tries to solve a murder by going to dreams, and gets about as intriguing as you'd imagine. It is so much more than just "the movie Nolan ripped off for Inception", if you happen to believe that claim.
8541903cc7-235.webp

M

Year: 1931Director: Fritz LangMy rating: 4/5
One of the most well-known and highest-rated movies out there, and I still feel the need to advertise it. Fritz Lang's German detective movie about a child murderer deals with a very taboo topic, and somehow manages to make everything work in a tight, gripping package. if you are trying to give these old, intimidating films a chance, please go for it and watch this.
2693e93a7f-235.webp

Wild Strawberries

Year: 1957Director: Ingmar BergmanMy rating: 4/5
Here's a movie that I can definitely tell I will continue to appreciate the older I get. Such a confident tale of reminiscing about life, and it was directed by a guy that was 39 at the time. Bergman's Smultronstället tells the story of an old professor who travels through the Swedish countryside and reflects on his life, it's a must-watch if you're trying to get into his filmography.

Synecdoche, New York

Year: 2008Director: Charlie KaufmanMy rating: 4,5/5
The only Kaufman film I've seen besides Anomalisa, this was honestly an incredible watch. Immersive, creative, beautifully crafted, and almost never bloated or incomprehensible. This movie probably divides a lot of people, but I'm firmly in the appreciation side. Oh, right, I didn't even tell you what the movie was about... maybe read a synopsis somewhere online, I can't even properly explain it without getting confused.

Loving Vincent

Year: 2017Director: DK and Hugh WelchmanMy rating: 4/5
A movie about one of the most peculiar painters, with every single frame being a painting. Come on, how incredible is that? From what I heard, the insanely good animation does heavy lifting in an otherwise subpar story about a young man trying to find out how Vincent van Gogh died, but I disagree. The story is well-written, sucks you in and makes you want to see the mystery get solved. I'm glad the Academy also recognized the film, maybe you should too, instead of whatever DreamWorks or Illumination just released?

The Movies

I'm not going to list every single movie I watched in this blog, but in case you're interested, I listed all of them in a sheet that you can access below. Note that the movies are listed alphabetically.

The Future

Well, that was that. A brief look into my year in film. Honestly, it was very interesting for me to look closer at what I watched and so forth. How will 2026 fare? I do want to watch as many movies as plausible, but as my pace slowed down in 2025 due to life getting in the way, especially in December, I do fear this trend will carry on to this year as well. Nevertheless, I will continue to enjoy movies and always find new, interesting ones to watch, and with the award season rolling in, will probably watch more 2025 films. My other goals include watching more and more movies from around the world, watching as many of the highest-rated movies in Letterboxd as I can muster, trying to get into Kurosawa's filmography, and continue to watch the films on my watchlist.

I hope you picked something from reading this. As I said, this was a bit different from the usual movie blogs and perhaps only interested a few people based on the topic alone. How was your movie year? What did you like the most? Are you anticipating something in 2026?

Images of the movie covers are from Wikipedia and IMDb.

Very interesting blog! I'm actually also collected plenty of data about the movies I watched in 2025 after having read patisserie's blog but haven't made a blog of them (yet?).

I'm procrastinating Paprika for months. I should really watch it. My animated movie knowledge really lacks Satoshi Kon, actually.
