September 11, 2001

It was a normal day in New York City. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were standing in striking contrast to the city below them. People went on about their business. But, little did they know, in a few minutes, this day would change America and the world forever. It was 8:46 when the plane, American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower. At first, people thought it was an accident. But that collision instantly killed 92 people. Lower Manhattan shifted from a normal Tuesday morning to a state of chaos. Emergency responders immediately responded. 2 minutes after the collision, a news helicopter came, specifically Chopper 880 for WCBS. At 9:03, the South Tower was hit by United Airlines Flight 175. This was not some accident. This was a terrorist attack. At 9:59, the South Tower collapsed. At 10:28, the North Tower collapsed.

Buildings Damaged or Destroyed

The North Tower was the first to be hit on 9/11 at 8:46. It collapsed at 10:28.

The South Tower was also hit. Despite being hit at 9:03, it collapsed at 9:59.

The Marriott World Trade Center was a hotel directly underneath the Twin Towers. Rubble from the North and South Tower left this hotel in ruins.

7 World Trade Center suffered several damage from rubble from the North Tower. This building collapsed a few hours later.

The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was not part of the World Trade Center. Despite being built in the 1830s, the attacks brought down this church.

4, 5, and 6 WTC were 8-9 story tall black office buildings. When the Twin Towers collapsed, they were left in ruins. They were eventually demolished.

2 World Financial Center was damaged because of glazing and façade damage due to falling debris

3 World Financial Center was because of column debris from WTC1 damaged the south east corner of the building. Falling debris also caused 8 of the 10 stories in the octagonal extension, or annex, of the building to collapse.

(I was originally gonna go all of the buildings, but that'd make the blog too long.)

A section of the Deutsch Bank Building was destroyed by falling debris from WTC2. This building was eventually demolished in 2011.

Debris from the collapse of WTC7 caused severe structural damage to the south face of the Fitterman Hall as well as damage to the southern half of the west façade

There was also a mall under the World Trade Center that was destroyed after the attacks.

This image was taken in the aftermath of 9/11. This image makes me feel uncanny.     Credits: https://www.reddit.com/r/911archive/comments/1kgigko/the_mall_at_the_world_trade_center_after_it_was/

Clean Up

People eventually referred to the area of rubble as Ground Zero. It took 11 months to clean everything up.

New World Trade Center Complex

World Trade Center 7 was the first building of the New World Trade Center to be built. Construction started from 2002-2006. It was the first building to get LEED Gold.

This building is slightly taller than the original.

4 World Trade Center was completed in 2013.

This one was obviously taller than the original.

One World Trade Center is the tallest building in New York City, the United States, 7th Globally, and in the Western Hemisphere.

That one blue one on the left! Standing at 1,776 feet, it's slightly taller than the North Tower.
3 World Trade Center is one of the tallest in the country.
This is Three World Trade Center. It is way taller than the Marriott World Trade Center.

5 World Trade Center is not yet completed but this is what it's supposed to look like.

Unfortunately, there won't be a 6 World Trade Center. What a shame..
