History

The county was created in 1887 from parts of Brevard and Orange Counties.

The county prospered due to its strategic location and natural resources, connecting the coasts to the inland. This made it a hub for cattle, sugar, railroads, lumber, etc. The county also has a flag, made by J. Luann Griffin, depicting Osceola.

Miscellaneous & Fun Facts

Politically-wise, it went republican from 1952 to 1992. Post-1992, it has changed as a swing-like county, going democratic and republic in newer elections (i.e. 2008-2020 democratic \ 2024 republican). It is home to the Johnson University College. It is also home to St. Cloud and is one of the fastest-growing counties in Florida in terms of population, due to its large number of Puerto Rican migrants. It is the 12th largest-majority Hispanic county in the country.

Recreation-wise, you can visit the Holopaw and Narcoosee Community Center and Parks. There's also quite a lot more community centers and parks within the county as well. You can also visit Lake Kissimmee, Marian, and Hatchineha, as well as the Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area.

History

For a long time, the Apache and Comanche tribes inhabited the vicinity of King County, Texas. However, the Red River War forced the tribes to relocate on reservations, opening the land for white settlers.

The county was created on August 21, 1876 from Bexar County. It wasn't until 1891 where the county was organized. Ranches were built in the county. Oil was also discovered in the county in 1943.

Miscellaneous & Fun Facts

The county used to be a heavy democratic county until a shift in 1980 made the county a rural republican. King County is the third-least populated county in the country. It is also the second-least populous county in the state, only behind Loving County. The county has been declining in population, most likely due to newer technological advancements in agriculture, causing people to move to more urban areas by low employment rates.
