Arrival

For the first time in my life, I am in Europe. I will be spending this semester at Trinity College Dublin. Founded in 1592, it is only 27 years older than St. Augustine, Florida! So far I have only been to the Netherlands and Ireland. Amsterdam was fun - Ireland not so much. I have never known America's cultural dominance until I came over to Ireland. Their food, music, pop culture - it is all American. Really a shame. Additionally, all pubs in Dublin are owned by the same PE firm. Same prices, same staff uniforms, same drinks. "Gaelic Culture" has apparently deteriorated.

More to come later.

More people speak Polish as a first language in Ireland than Irish as a first language.

Yep! And it's so sad. Gaeilge is a gorgeous language, I was lucky enough to take a beginners class while I was living over there last year. So sad that the language has been dying due to the colonial legacy still left in the country

The attempts at language revival have definitely fallen short.

You should take the train out of Dublin to one of the smaller towns, much more Irish culture in the pubs, Dublin is just like any city, McDonalds and Starbucks have taken over.

Thats what I'm thinking. Trains are pretty accessible here so I'm probably gonna take one out of the countryside/southern and western coasts.

it is such an interesting experience, and I am glad i am not the only one who noticed these things! I spent last semester at Maynooth University for study abroad and made many similar observations

I highly recommend making your way out to the Boyne Valley, Trim, Leixlip, Maynooth, and Bray. All close to Dublin, I really enjoyed. Further out, Cork and Galway are both incredible day trips or weekend get-aways. Galway is probably my favorite place in the whole world!.
