#882 is slightly more complicated. The War Department was only responsible for the Army and there was a separate cabinet-level Department of the Navy.

The Department of Defense was created to hold the Army, Navy, and the newly-created Air Force.

Nevertheless, the Department of War is a much more honest name in my opinion.
