The issue is that it follows up several questions that ask "how many of this thing are there?" and so in my case, at least, my brain was primed to be looking for that kind of an answer:
● How many English monarchs...?
● How many times has England won...?
● How many countries with a population...?
● How many wives has...?
And so my brain went:
● How many words are there that are homophones of a word starting with W?
Again: there's nothing in the actual wording of the question that suggests that; it's just that my brain was following a pattern. I didn't understand what the question was actually asking until seeing all the answers at the end.
It might be helpful, though certainly not necessary, to change the wording to (something like): "A number whose name is a homophone of a word that starts with W"
A bit clunky but maybe helpful. Just a thought.
