One of my favourite books of all time, so I was pretty disappointed to miss 5 of the answers (including the main character's name - I just drew a total blank on it!). I think I need to re-read it...
I agree with Tramp, except that is my favourite book of all time. Besides the main plot, it was a brilliant idea to amend the language to make it harder or even impossible to express certain thoughts and thus harder actually to think them.
Nice quiz. I read it when I was 15, which was in 1983. Most of the answers came to me but I couldn't get the 2% question. Obviously I had to do the quiz again to get them all right.
Orwell did humanity a huge favor with this novel, which is easy to understand and gives people a shared lexicon they can use to recognize and label the common tactics of fascists.
It really is amazing how much of this novel has worked its way into the common parlance. Annoying, almost, how often people refer to something as "1984," but Orwell certainly made his point.
I think, at least in the US, both parties are guilty to an extent of many impacts on freedom. The problem is that supporters of either party only accuse the other of being fascist. What's the point of being able to identify fascist behaviour when you actually support it when it's being used in your favour...
Might be the only person who did this, but can we accept "the place where there is no darkness" for room 101? The more poetic version has stuck with me ever since i first read it
