Well, it was called Denali by some while officially McKinley and now McKinley by some while officially Denali. In my Alaskan family, we use them interchangeably.
Us locals call it either Denali or McKinley. just like the town Barrow is now called Utqiagvik, but a lot of people still call it Barrow, but if you say either, we all know what you mean.
Have to agree with the Mt. McKinley comments – the mountain's officially-recognized name has reverted to Denali, so you should remove the "alternative name" question, or change it to "What was the above's previous name?", with "Mt. McKinley" as the answer.
Kotzebue! Didn't think I would see that name again after my literary studies. The guy was a dramatist and conservative thinker whose assassination served as the pretext for harsh censorship in 19th century Germany. He and his son also worked for the Russian Empire, which is how the name ended up being used in Alaska.
Every adult American should know at least Juneau and Anchorage, and probably Fairbanks too. Barrow has been the subject of a lot of articles and documentaries and such, because its status as the northernmost city in the US brings unique challenges (all their supplies come in once a week by plane, they started a high school football problem to combat the meth epidemic that started because prospects are so bleak for young people, basic toiletries have exorbitant prices because it's hard to ship them there, and so on). Not sure where I pulled Nome from, but I've heard of it. Never heard of Sitka, but if it used to be the capital, it's fair game.
The city is now called Utqiagvik now and is no longer called Barrow officially and the quiz should reflect that. I understand accepting Barrow, but it shouldn't show Barrow as the correct answer when filling it in.
I agree Mikey, its been 5 years since City of Utqiaġvik was made official so it's time for jetpunk to be updated. sure it will make the quiz tougher but its a pretty easy quiz as it stands now. I got 100% in 1:16 and I have only been to Alaska once.
Born and raised in Alaska, and i did not know that Sitka used to be the capital. However that was long before we were a state. Sitka is a beautiful place though, i've only been there once and would love to go back.
