Is it some kind of reference to something? , cause i thought it was kind of a bad clue, trashcans doesnt make you think of phonebooks. yes they are big and when thrown away it takes up space, but that hardly seems enough reason to give it as a clue.
I think the idea is that they're so outdated and useless now (with the advent of the internet, cell phones with unlisted numbers, etc.) that most people just throw them away immediately without using them.
Perhaps it's different in the Netherlands, but I know that around here (North America), when the phone books get circulated, you can walk down the alley the next day and most houses have just dumped their phone books straight into the recycling bin. I feel like at least 75% of houses will have a stack of phone books sitting in the alley. There is definitely a strong connection between the two for me.
