Wikipedia says sea shanty, chantey, or chanty are used, and there has never been a standardized spelling, but the word may have originated from the French "chanter". I have never seen chanty, we (in the netherlands) say shanty. I wonder if all countries have a word for it. Cause I somehow felt it was a typical northsea thing
Technically speaking, Aegean Sea is a part of Mediterranean Sea, so I guess the latter could also be accepted as an answer. I believe no one would argue that if Miami can be found in Florida, it can also be found in the United States ;)

Phuket is a big tourist spot, it's not that obsolete. Fun fact: there's also James Bond island near Phuket. If you've ever seen "The Man with the Golden Gun", it might look familiar.
