That was done just for tourism "branding" purposes. Holland is definitely not the Netherlands, but a part of it. I don't understand how people have such a hard time understanding this.
It's not difficult to understand at all, but when the name Holland is so widely used to refer to the country that even the Dutch government does it for branding purposes, maybe it's time to just let it go.
Try a Google Translate for "the Netherlands" in:
Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Corsican ... and the first result is some phonetic version of 'Holland', with many others listing it as a second or third option (and I couldn't be bothered to try languages after C in the alphabet).
Darwin actually did recant the theory of evolution before he died and became a Christian he wrote a final chapter of his book where he recants it however the publishers refuse to put it in the book
Are you sure that's not just Christian propaganda? I've seen several articles (like in The Times of all places) about how all us atheists actually believe in god or decide to when we know we are going to die. Utter rubbish.
That's a nice conspiracy theory, but The Origin of Species is long out of copyright, so anyone can publish it if they want to, even the select few who have seen this fabled lost last chapter.
Anyway, even if Darwin had reneged on his ideas all that would prove was that he was wrong to think he was wrong - all the work of proving that he was actually right was done long after he was dead.
Wrong, The way that science works is that even if a theory is widely accepted as rigorous and logical by the scientific community it can be negated by a deathbed change of heart. The science becomes null and void.
If you've read the comments you should know it's REALLY Victoria, but there are dense people who sink to the bottom and don't notice the title at the top
I played several April Fools quizzes in a row so when I was playing a general knowledge quiz in between I forgot and kept wondering why my correct answers were considered April Fools answers.
Fun quiz as always, and I do love how much I learn with these because there are always several questions which answers I'd actually always thought to be true. You know, these kind of things you hear idly but never quite bother to check. The falling apple thing, ofr instance, is one I'd heard several times, including by one of my teachers, so I always sort of took it for granted. The burning bras too - again, sort of heard it around but never studied that time period enough to actually learn or verify that it was true. (I always thought it was a very stupid thing to do though considering how bloody expensive the things are so I'm glad :-D)
Thomas Crapper.....pssht! Everyone knows it was his brother, John P. Crapper who invented the toilet. That's why we still call it both a John and a Crapper today! ;)
In case people don't know, Thomas Crapper was a real plumber who invented things to improve the toilet, but is often miscredited with inventing the lavatory itself.
I know you did some work on the early Internet sami, but Al Gore actually was instrumental in helping pass legislation that led to the Internet's development. And that's all he ever actually claimed. He never said he invented it.
I loved that - I typed Holland (as always, because it is another name for the Netherlands and easier to type, but never mind that here) and I was very, very happy to see QM had put it in there!
The amount of people correcting the Victoria/Vancouver question is making me laugh. But as someone who lives in Vic, it's kinda sad how many people don't know its the capital
Obama swearing his oath office on an Islamic text - one of the more remarkable conspiracy theories. He probably masterminded the attack of the Towers as well!

...I'm proud of myself for that.
Canadians know these things.
